4 ohm head in a 8 ohm cab

Sign in to disble this ad
I was thinking of getting a Solid State head which is rated at 200w @ 4 ohms. I wanted to put this is a cab is 400w (or 200w still debating on which cab) and both have an impedance of 8ohms. Would this be safe? Will there be a drop in wattage any help would be great thanks.

Safe, lower wattage though.

two 8 ohm cabs will give you a total impedance of 4 ohms which according to your head will give you 200 watts. not a lot of power but it all depends on what kind of music you are playing and what your bandmates have

Not playing and gigs just jamming with my drummer in his basement. I figured around 200W would be satisfying

Using that head with ONE 8 ohm cabinet will give you around 100-125 watts.

To get 200 watts from the head you need either a 4 ohm cab, or use two 8 ohm cabs.

Suppose I went with something in the 300w range do you think I would be around 200 and some change? Also is this 100% safe?

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.

Do you mean going with an AMP rated at 300 watts @ 4 ohms ?

If so, then you would probably get around 150-175 watts @ 8 ohms.

If you are looking to run at around 200 watts into a single 8 ohm cab, you really need a head rated for at least 400 watts @ 4 ohms.

Doing it is perfectly safe as long as you are dealing with a solid state head. With SS heads, the impedance listed on the back is the minimum rating. If you are dealing with tube heads, you need to match the output impedance with the cabs you use.

With a solid state head rated at a minimum of 4 ohms you are safe running anything OVER the minmum (you will just get lower power). Just don't go below 4 ohms (an 8 ohm cab + a 4 ohm cab = 2.67 ohms, and a 4 ohm cab + a 4 ohm cab = 2 ohms) or you can damage the head.
