410 Advice: Hartke/Trace/Ampeg?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I'm looking to spend my CG gift cards and I need a cab. I know I want a 410. I had originally decided on a Hartke 4.5XL 410 that my local shop has for $249. But now I've seen a couple more that I'm interested in and I wanted your experiences with them, if you've had it.

Here are the 4 I'm considering:
Hartke 4.5XL for $249
Trace 4x10 for $299 (see below, no model # listed)
Ampeg BSE410H for $299
Ampeg PR-410HLF for $329 (pic below)

If it matters, I'm playing a Jazz through a Hartke HA4000 head. I play in a Rush tribute band, so I use a Geddy type tone (low action, HEAVY attack, etc..). I run post signal split/eq through a PA though, so I'm just looking for a decent backline tone and something decent for rehearsing, practicing and tone shaping.

Let me know what you think.

I have one of those Trace Elliot cabs, The Model is 1048H from series 6. It is a very nice cab, Nice tight Low end and the Horn gives a very detailed High end, very sparkly. The Only thing I don't like about this cab is that it is Very Heavy, probably more than 50kg.

they're all fine cabs. hlf cabs go way lower with the lows than i care for, but i don't think you'd go wrong with any of them.

I'm actually leaning towards the trace. First because I've read good things about them, and I've just always wanted one. Weight doesn't bother me, I appreciate the input so far. Thanks for the model info also.

I really don't know much at all about the ampeg stuff. I think the trace would be a little meatier than the hartke also.

anyone else?

the bse410 was the cab victor wooten and steve bailey were endorsing while they were at ampeg. that's the extent of my knowledge, except hearing vic live and thinking he sounded great.

Reading some of the stuff on the Ampeg stuff, it says the PR-410HLF cab is 'designed' for funk, jazz & r&b. I think the trace may be more along the lines of the sound I'm looking for.

Anyone else have experience with these?

After doing some more reading, I pulled the trigger on the Ampeg PR-410hlf today. Can't wait to get 'er home and fired up.

Anyone know where I can find replacement casters for this thing?

Well I just tried it and it buzzes (rattles) like crazy. It's going back.

Now I'm stuck between the Hartke 4.5xl and the Trace 1048H. I'm REALLY excited about lugging this damn thing out of my house.
