4ohm speaker in 8 ohm cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an SWR son of Bertha with a blown speaker. It is an 8 ohm 1x15 cab. Is it possible to drop a 4ohm speaker in there? This is probably a noob question, but any help is appreciated!!!

It depends if your cab has a crossover. if so I don't think you can just swap the speaker and it be all good. or you can just take the crossover out of play and connect the speaker to the jack and it will work just fine.

There is no guarantee that it will sound good (and almost certain to not sound like the SOB) because the enclosure isn't designed for that driver, and it will change the crossover freq of the tweeter because of the different ohm load.

The more I look at it the more I realize it's not a good idea. The problem is that the direct replacement costs $300, which I think is a bit much considering I bought the cab used for $200 last year. Any suggestions for a replacement cab?

Only $150...

I think the one in the middle is best. The Kappa-Pro (non-LF) should make the SoB sound great, and it has better power handling capability.
I don't think the LF model is good for bass guitar in a typical 1X15 like the SWR SoB because of the limited frequency response. The LF would be better in a sub-woofer.
