4x10 plus tweeter crossover help?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 4x10 cabinet. It's empty. I want to buy 4 10" speakers for it as well as a decent tweeter. Only problem is, I know NOTHING about tweeters OR crossovers. Can someone suggest one of each? Possibly explain a little about how to go about choosing the right crossover for your cab?

Most commercial 410's are pretty similair in size but you'd still have to take measurements of it to see what drivers will work best with it's internal volume and porting. With the price of neo nowdays it might make more sense to just buy a used 410 that's already together. Also most bass cabs don't use a real crossover, the 10's recieve the full signal and the tweeter just has a highpass filter on it...kinda like 1/2 of a crossover. Sometimes this amounts to a single capacitor although that's really not enough protection.

Well I'm kind of wanting to learn as much about this because Im interesting in building bass cabs.

What about cabs with a tone knob on the back? Is that also a high pass filter? Only adjustable??

The filter frequency is fixed. The "l-pad" on the back is an attenuator that maintains the same resistance (8 ohms) as it's turned. It's like a cut-only volume knob for the tweeter.

No. You must use an LPad, not a volume pot, it must be post crossover and properly wired.
There are no shortcuts to learning how to build a good speaker. Take advantage of the links supplied and read, read, read.
