Question 4x15" Trace Elliot - Peavey - Emperor - etc...

Sign in to disble this ad
What is with these monsters? They look awesome, but what about sound quality? Can they hang by themselves or are they in need of some high-range support? I recently found a Trace Elliot 4x15 that I'm seriously considering but I want to know a little more about their sound first!

You can't really go wrong with nice TE cabs.

I have still never played anything Trace and it bothers me. They look so cool but I just don't know where to find them!

You do realize that this is no different than asking "how does (insert any other speaker configuration) sound?" There is no "standard" 4x15 sound, just like there is no standard 2x10 sound.

They are big cabinets, and they should put out a lot of sound. Beyond that, it's a case by case thing. If you can try the Trace out, give it a shot and buy it if you like it.

I think there is an unwarranted impression some folks have that 15" cabs dont put out any mids, specifically upper mid. Same as generalising that 2x10" cab dont have lows this is a fallacy. I have had 2x15 cabs that were mud, I have had some that are very bright in the upper mid as well. One thing I have noticed about the few 4x15 cabs that I have played is that they can easily get muddy if you pour on the bass. That much motor movement seems to require a very stiff cabinet. I did play through a one off 4x15 that a pal has and it could take all the bass in the world and would just pulverize you shins. That particular box WAS kind of veiled sounding and not terribly distinct in the mid to uper mid. But in a good way. It sounded like gods forming mountain ranges.

I was just throwing the question out there man.... I've never heard one before and was asking what the sound quality was. Chill

Besides all that... The cab is an earlier model and it's British made, sounds like some high quality equipment!

Hey man, you can't go wrong with older TE cabs. I can't speak for the newer series, but I have played plenty of British-made Trace cabs from the 90's and earlier, and I can say that I have yet to find one that wasn't stunning. The 1991 Trace Elliot 810 that I had was one of the most clear and articulate cabs with a sound that was strong and focused enough to blow a hole in the wall. It had amazing lows and crisp highs. I really wish I hadn't sold it, but at nearly 200lbs, the right transportation is key.

My thoughts exactly! Punch a hole in the wall is what I gotta do (granted this isn't an 8x10 but it should shake the wall down!)

Well guys... they sold the cab... They also said it was an experimental/custom cab from T.E. That would've been a noice cab to have that for sure, thanks for the replies!

True, but there is a 'standard' angle of midrange dispersion with both those configurations. A 4x15 will beam at a much lower frequency than a 2x10. If you don't have much mid content anyway, or don't care if only the audience directly in front of your cab can hear your mids, it's a moot point. But if you like your mids and want everyone to hear them the 4x15 form isn't what you want to use.

that 4x15 looks amazing but i would not want to lift it. I find my 6x10 too heavy.

You'd have to be 7ft tall to be able to reach both side handles and get under it. I struggle enough with 88lb of 1518.
