Dang, I should have tried that while I had the LB30 in for review. My guess is that it will pair up quite well. That Ashdown VS112 really kicks butt, especially with that head.

I'm into this for sure!
Ampeg B-25 with 2-15's, 55 watts. Tung-Sol 12ax7's and Sylvania 7027a's. While I do like the effect of the tube rectifier, I did replace it with a plug in solid state. More punch and oomph to be heard. I'm so glad I kept the amp after I thought I outgrew it. Now it is my reference amp, by which all others are judged.

Ampeg V4BH with 2 svt-15-e's. I just had to have a 100 watt tube head. I use it for almost everything now. Played around with pre-tubes a bit and very satisfied with RCA's in it. A set of Winged C's are ready when needed for power.

Recently I've been working on an old Bassman chassis (45 watts I think) to drive a 4-12 set at 2 ohms. Not quite ready for action yet.

The idea of a 50 - 100 watt Marshall set up for bass is very interesting to me! Great thread!

Laney A.O.R 50

I'm told this is the Laney version of a modded JCM 800.
It has this strange bass boost function, that interacts with the master volume. The lower the master volume, the bigger the bass boost.Works fantastically as a low power bass amp.

I had one of those and used it with single-coil (Strat-style) guitars. Too trebley to my liking. I am surprised you like it for bass.

The boosts are actually FET transistors that actually disable the prewired attenuation in the tone controls... But they sure do sound like "boosts". If it works for you, it's a great economy solution and tube tone for days!

So are you telling me that a SuperBass is just a Superlead revamped(basically)? If so, not too shabby.

In other news, I hope to join one of these tube clubs soon. I also am thinking of picking up recording as a hobby(that'll take me a few dollars, and some much needed patience to get good enough). I am also wanting to do everything analog for the most part. Weird? Probably. However, I am in the market to pick up gear nowadays, and small tube amps in the 1-100w market are right up my alley

Once you go tube, you never go back. Well, until you are tired of carrying the oversized paper weights at times.

SS/Hybrid amps have their place, but for me, and many others in the bass community, we have our interests among many other things, including GAS, GAS and more GAS. B15's, Bassmans, V4's, Custom amps and well playing basses are all I want for Christmas. I still have my two front teeth.

Maybe the other way around. Or via a Fender.

They were all bass amps originally but the damned guitards got hold of them to drown us out with our own blimmn' amps we got made to try keep up with their 20W screamers. Every bass amp ever made has been twisted into a guitar amp.

Guitards are too wussy to deal with SVT's so you don't see them used much, small mercy.

Never let your guitarist buy a valve head over 50 watts unless you play stadiums. Nothing sounds like a Strat through a 50 watt Marshall.

Now to ask those that know just for fun, on say a REAL v4b, your chain enough cabs together to actually have to use the 2 ohm setting, is there a point of diminishing returns in spl?

Yes. But you would pack the stage with a beaming comb filtered mess machine long before you got to that limit.

Of course, maybe that's what the '73's looked like too.... Lol

That's what they looked like from 71-75. Either way, the serial numbers are a jumbled mess with little to no correlation with dates as far as had been determined. The best way is to use internal component date codes. Most of the large cement block resistors, cap cans, transformers, pots, etc should have date codes on them.

Since you guys are into this stuff, as i was, i have a Peavey Classic 120 watt tube power amp for sale, (4) fresh 6L6 tubes and (3) 12AX7, great condition and tons of pics, looking for a local sale.

I loved this power amp, used it with a GT tube pre and a Mesa/Boogies 2x10 for years, the latest band requires much more volume so i had to switch things up. For lower volume configurations this set up sounded incredible, was really great for vintage Funk.

Good to know, thanks for the info. I've always meant to have a tech give it a good going over, another excuse to have it serviced. :-)

I've modded many 50 and 100 watt amps, usually Fenders, to higher headroom. Usually, I rewire for 6550's (often adding an auxillary filament transformer), separate bias adjusts for each tube, and increased B+ filtering. This has turned some marginally useful bass amps into giggable amps.
