610, 810 or 412 for standard tuning rock/metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been rocking my Avatar B212 for a while it sounds fantastic, it just doesn't have enough volume for my new band. So I've been thinking about upgrading to a 610, 810 or a 412.

We play in standard tuning for most things, but drop tunings may happen in the future.

I'm definitely wanting a midrangey sound (steve harris perse), I instantly think 810, but what are the opinions on a 610 or a 412?

I can't add to my current setup because my Avatar is already 4 ohms and I'm running a MarkBass LMIII into it.

Thanks for suggestions

For me its either Ampeg 810E's or 410HLF's, I wouldn't get a 610HLF or another brand , I had one and got rid of it . It didn't put out enough. For moving around I have (2) HLF cabs but the 810E does rule IMO.......

check out as many different brands and cabs as you can, your cab has a huge influence on your tone. the ampeg 810 is a classic for rock, the MB cabs are nice and light and cut through a mix well

Take your bass and head to your local music store and start trying out everything they have, mix match two 8 ohm cabs, 4 ohms, whatever. Taste everything!!!

+1 to RNV's comment, try everything.

Most of us have gone through what you're experiencing. I ended up with the Ampeg 810E at the end of my search. I would recommend it to anyone. Let us know what you end up with, we gear heads love to hear about it.

I own an Ampeg SVT-610HLF. It was decent but running it at max volume I still had issues now and then keeping up with my guitarists and their full stacks. My BassBomb 212 I think is actually louder with more head room. Wish I had gone with an 810 or 410 instead of the 6.

RNV has the right idea... People can tell you "X is better than Y" but only you can decide which sounds best for you. I tested every cab i could when i first got into live music, ended up sticking with the Ampeg 410HLF for my metal group based on the sound and portability. i loved the "monster cab, monster sound" look and feel of the 810... i just dont have the means to get an 810 around town! The 410HLF fits perfectly in my transporting situation, without compromising the sound i love.

I like the sealed 810 for rock, but I think ported anything is best for metal.

well 8 10 will be louder than a 6 10 because of cone area, sound wise I expect pretty much the same with changes for speaker and box design of course. 12 I think may give you a little more low end but I dont think a 4 12 will be as loud as an 8 10. I play hardrock and metal and I currently use a fearful 12 DIed into the PA. but am planning on a 2 12 combo in to the pa soon

I can't recommend the Bergantino NV cabs enough for anything rock related. I have the 610. There is a 412 as well which I never played but I'm sure it's great too. Not too big or heavy. Compared to an 810 fridge they are small and light. Loud enough for anything IMO. I don't really get the 10s vs 12s thing, seems like splitting hairs to me. When I need a little bit more low end I bump the bass on the amp. There can be so much bass coming from my SVT / NV 610 rig that it almost hurts. Whatever though. So... yeah Bergantino NV cabs.

I had a 2X12. Didn't cut it. Added another 2X12. Still didn't cut it. Bought an Berg NV610. Cuts it wonderfully and is a lot easier to fit in my car and cart around. I've played through many Ampeg 8X10s, I rehearse through one reguarly now and the Berg is way louder, punchier, and lighter. I have no love whatsoever for Ampeg refridgerator cabs. Not sure what motivates anyone to lug one around except maybe for the name and vintage vibe.

have you thought about adding an avatar 2x10 or another 2x12, or a 4x10 on top of your current cab?

SWR Megoliath 8x10. I can't recommend this cabinet enough. I've dragged mine all over the country and played hundreds of shows with it. It's a beast.

I currently have a 610 SWR Goliath Senior. I play in a hardcore/metal band and that's cuts through for me just fine. Of course the guitarist is only playing out of a Marshall halfstack. And when it comes to transporting the cab, its not bad at all.

Upgrading to a 410 will get you ~ 40% more cone area than your 212 currently has, so going bigger than that may be overkill. We play hard rock/metal, 7-string guitar, tune A-E-A-D-G, and my Uber 410 has never left me wanting. The thing loves power and sounds better the more you push it. On-stage, I have to turn down from my basement volume, which isn't loud... you should check one out.

I like the GB XB2 6x10. IMO it has more lows than an Ampeg 8x10 because its ported. I have one and my cousin plays in a metal band with one.
