6x10 vs 1x12s?

Sign in to disble this ad
In general, how comparable would the sound be of a head running at 4 ohms through a 6x10 cab be to the same head running through 2 1x12 cabs?

Lets say the 1x12s were bergantino, and the 6x10 was an ampeg SVT. Would the sound be just as big? What would be the general difference in tone, etc?

I know it depends on a bunch of variables, but im just looking for a ballpark answer. Im trying to decide what would be better for me. Id rather have 2 112s, but i just want to know if it would have just as much of a sonic presence as the 6x10s.

Thanks

Depends on the cabs. In my experience the Ampeg 6x10 is pretty quiet and extremely displacement limited.

I think you'd get pretty similar sensitivity with a couple Berg AE112s as set against the Ampeg 6x10 (which is really not a good cabinet).

Re: the SVT 6x10 -- I enjoy it, it sounds good, but it has no guts. Can't get loud enough. I like it a lot with a low wattage tube head.

I think there was a similar thread to this earlier this week. IMHO, the Bergantino stack sounds significantly better than the 610. The only downside to these cabs is that they were light on the bottom end, but as I understand it, the ER cabs have really addressed this (though I haven't heard them personally). They are very sweet and clear with good midrange punch. The Ampeg by comparison (again only my opinion) is dull and lifeless. Seems like Ampeg tried to get the best of both worlds of the 810 and 410 hlf, but frankly the cab just didn't hit it. One of the worst sounding cabs I've ever played through. I could only get a blurry tone out of it - it doesn't have the punch of an 810 or that big, wide bottom of the 410hlf.

I think the Berg cabs are more efficient and much clearer sounding, so you can hear yourself better in a live mix. But do they really fill the room? In my experience, no - but honestly I'm not sure the 610 does either. It may be bigger sounding overall, but much harder to hear yourself (if that makes any sense). I think 2 Berg 112s are awesome. If you're looking for similar tone but bigger, try out some of the other Berg cabs - HS410 or AE410 if you like ported, NV610 or NV412 if you like sealed. They will DEFINITELY fill the room and smoke the Ampeg without breathing hard...

yeah, i posted a similar question a few days ago, but no one directly addressed the 2x12 vs 6x10 explicitly.

But thanks, i definitely got what i was looking for out of this. You guys are great.

a 2X12 isn't going to keep up with a 6x10 unless the drivers in the 6x10 aren't very good at all.

I wouldn't call that 610 dull and lifeless in my experience, I like it for it's enveloping sound-it's a bit like a more pillowy sounding 810 fridge with the same low mid bump but without the low end roll off. The 12' cabs would sound vastly different I presume though, I would guess they would sound punchier compared to the 610. I'm going to be downsizing to a 212 or 410 in the future so I have the same decision to make.

hi,i have 2 cabs that i use,a 6x10 and a 2x12.the 6x10 i can drive very hard and get stacks of volume from it.it's tight, punchy, loud and rocks but i can't get a warm smooth velvety sound from it.if i want that i turn to the 2x12's.not as much vol but smooth and warm without being floppy.produces a great bottom end too when used with a p-bass and flats.my favourite combo at the moment..

I got rid of my 610hlF lost money on it and don't miss it. Instead, I have the 410HLF's and 810E (the standard ) . +1 on the bergantino's never played them or heard them but they sound like the right choice........

Bergantino's three NV cabs (2X15, 6X10, 4X12) seem roughly comparable in terms of size and volume, although they certainly don't sound identical to one another.

I often gig with a very good 3-way ported 2X12, and it's not the equal of any of the three Bergantino NV cabs in volume. When I have a BIG gig, I add more cabs, something I doubt I'd have to do with any of the NV cabs mentioned above.

In summary, although I gig twelves, I don't find two twelves or a 2X12 comparable to the 6X10 cabs I covet; two twelves are an order of magnitude quieter.

the only 2x12 cabs that i own that could keep up with my SVT610HLF are my Accugroove whappo jr. and a custom built 12126 cab. i liked the 610HLF, but the whappo jr is capable of being louder, cleaner and fuller, and my 12126 is definitely the 610's equal, and basically surpasses it too.
