Question 70's SVT "faceplate"

Sign in to disble this ad
mine has kind of a cheesy plastic overlay, I always thought they were aluminum, or some kind of metal..is mine an aftermarket piece of crap replacement, or is this the way it's supposed to be?..Does anyone know if the aftermarket replacement part from fliptop.com is metal, or the seemingly cheap/flimsy/paper-thin plastic crap like mine?

SVT faceplate

maybe mine was an aftermarket cosmetic "dress-up kit" instead of a quality replacement part..looks fine, but it just doesn't seem quite right to me..thinking of replacing it, if the correct part is metal and readily availible, I will..

depends on what period of the 70s your amp is from.

69-71:
http://www.fliptops.net/catalog/prod...roducts_id=552
71-75:
http://www.fliptops.net/catalog/prod...roducts_id=264
75-80:
http://www.fliptops.net/catalog/prod...roducts_id=266

The two earlier versions are both currently out of stock.

I'm waiting on these to come back in stock too, most of the print on my '74 is worn off

I was thinking of getting one for my 74, but decided I like the scratchy faded look.

I bought the Ampeg V4b faceplate from fliptops and it is definitely metal and an exact replica of the the original one I replaced. I couldn't tell the difference. I'm sure the Fliptops guy (I think his name is Bruce) wouldn't have reproductions made and sell them if they're sub standard. It couldn't have come from fliptops.

Is yours a blueline? If so, fliptops replacements aren't etched into the metal like the originals were, they're just blue Ink. I ordered one and sent it back after discovering this a couple years ago.

I just noticed Fliptops blueline faceplate ad admits they're not Engraved now. Bruce told me back then he'd planned to have a batch of the correct ones made if there was a big enough demand, but they'd end up costing a lot more.

my '75 has a metal faceplate, but it also has a thin clear plastic overlay on it making it appear very glossy. i don't think it looks chessy at all and i know that the '75's came that way originally:

I have one of the earlier repros from Fliptops for my V4B - it's made of stainless steel and is clearcoated, which gives it a totally different look thn the ones he sells now - shinier and more chromey.

ahh

mine looks exactly like johnk's, but mine doesn't lay very flat/smooth, mainly around the nuts attatching the jacks/pots, maybe they were overtightened, causing the lumpy/bubbly appearance...must've been the way they were made in that era..never noticed on my old one..

Some of the early-72 production SVT's like mine came with the blueline face plates.
