I have a Sylvania (USA) 7199 tube.. it looks like a preamp type of tube, but where in a pre is it used? Also could it be used where a 12AX7 is used for gain?

Sure that is the right number/are there letters first? Not finding anything here: The National Valve Museum - Search Page

Wouldn't assume it is equivalent to any pre valves,t here were a ton of valve with different pinouts that can short your amp and such.

it's a triode-pentode and is in no way exchangeable for any of the 12A-7 series of twin triodes.

Put it up on Ebay and ask $15 if you know the tube is good. $5 as an "as is" item.

Then keep it as a spare. You never know when you might just need one.

Ampeg used the 7199 as a phase inverter in the B25B and B-18 bass amps with the 7027A power tubes.
