750w into a 600w cab...

Sign in to disble this ad
...before i get flamed about how this has been covered a hundred million times (i know it has)...but im asking about anyone's specific experience with this cab or head.

I currently have an ampeg PR410HLF which is rated at 600w at 4ohms RMS. Id like to power this with an Aguilar DB750...for potential use with more cabs, or two 8 ohm cabs (or 4 for that matter). I know the aggie's are VERY accurrate with wattage so...im worried about killing the cab...

What im worried about...is that ill mainly be using this head with the 4ohm ampeg. you think 750 is too much for it? I'm sure i wont be maxing gain or volume with this setup...but im worried about the spikes in power for diggin in with my fingers attack, or slapping. Think i could get away with it?

TIA

Hm...after reading up on the def of "Program Power" handling...i think id be ok for the few (if any) times it spikes up that high. Hopefully...ill never need to crank it without having my other cab handy....

Just don't go crazy with LOWS and/or VOLUME and you'll be ok...

And beware of clipping, as always...

and remember, ANY amp can potentially blow ANY cab, at ANY time. Just watch , as alexcosta mentioned, low eq, volume, and gain, and you should be just fine. Btw, the cab's rating is it's thermal limit, and has no bearing whatsoever on how much actual power it can handle. Usually about HALF it's rating.

What he said ^

I played my bass through a QSC PLX1602 (Bridged) in front of my 150watt GenzBenz GB12T and it sounded great, and I didn't blow it up. I also didn't go crazy with the Lows or volume, because that will do it.

I personally don't worry about "potential" output of and amp v.s. cabinet power handling until I've doubled the ratio, but I never max an amp on the volume either. YMMV

Yeah, but what about all the unicorns you made cry when you did this?

Charlie don't cry. I did knock his horn off with the devastating low freqeuncies though, and he forgave me for that.

I use a BagEnd S15-DX (250 watt cab) powered by a Genz Benz Shuttle 9.0 at blistering volumes often.

Have fun and don't hurt any small animals.

I suspect your sarcasmometer is in need of recalibration

Sorry!
Yeah, it's a bit on the "fritz" right now I guess!

But you'll be surprised how many people think like that though.

If you are talking about pre clipping, it's not gonna hurt anything;

OTOH if you are talking about power amp clipping, then the 410 is already blown, before you would ever see the clip light on the DB750.

You can totally do this is will be a great rig, but heavy. If you are worried about spikes add a peak limited to the chain and listen to the speakers. Cheers.
