8" bass speaker? (Danelectro Nifty Seventy)

I know this might sound like a futile attempt, but I can't help but wonder

I have a used Nifty Seventy amp - it's a small practice bass amp. I like it, closed back, it sounds good, but with my p-bass at slightly higher volumes it starts distorting (I don't think it used to). It's also good for guitar (to practice).

It has an 8" 4-ohm speaker.

Is there an inexpensive speaker that will sound good for bass. I am not trying to make it work in a drummer situation - just to get a pleasant sound that'll fill the room, i.e. to play along with acoustic piano.

I had one and loved the way it looked but never cared for the sound.
Sold mine ages ago but I think the distortion may be from the amp and not the speaker.
No way this thing puts out 70 watts peak music power; maybe it was a type setting error and it was supposed to say 7.0 watts RMS.

thanks so much for replying. i'm not sure the "Seventy" refers to 70 watts. Manufacturer's are funny - on big amps "15" in the model name will mean 15" speaker, on small amps it'll stand for 15 watts, etc.

the weird thing is: I really liked how it sounded with my fiddle bass (a cheap copy similar to Epi Viola, fully hollowbody). I only started noticing the fartiness with the P. I'll have to try that again.

I am thinking you might be right: perhaps the bass is overloading the amp. Do you think that cutting the volume knob on the bass might help?

I think the amp just doesn't have that much juice. It's 15 watts RMS with an 8 inch "Dano woofer." From here: http://www.shreveaudio.com/danoguitaramps.html

It seem to me that you have bought several basses but not laid out the coin to by an amp capable of doing them justice. Anything with a single 8" driver will not make a decent bass amp. I would recommend that you don't waste money on the amp but put the cash towards a better amplifier.

I sometimes play my basses through one of my Crate TX30 Taxi battery powered monitor amps. They have 30 watts and an 8" full range speaker and tweeter. Never had an issue with it distorting even with 5 string acoustic/electric bass. You might want to see if Crate sells a replacement full range 8" speaker for those......

Well, I know it seems that way, but I am not the bass player in the current group I am with - we have a good (and heavy) amp for live playing and while personally I'd love to have a 4x10 cab and a head, there's really no room in the house or the budget.

So a practice amp is precisely what I need. And the Dano amp had also good reviews for acoustic guitar use, so it pulls double duty.

Again, I am not expecting miracles.

BTW, I've given up on the speaker idea - no sense spending more on the amp. It's ok.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
