8 ohm to 4 ohm?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a GK400RB head and an 8 ohm GK115RBS cabinet.

The head puts out (I think) 120 watts at 8 ohms; 200 watts at 4 ohms.

The spekaer is fine, but is it ignorant to think about replacing the speaker with a 4 ohm? If not, how does one determine which speaker to use?

I would just get another GK115RBS cab and run both for a combined 4 ohm load......

Yep ... that is a good solution.

The reason that this is good advice is two-fold:

1. Output is all about how much air you move; and
2. The price of a second 8 ohm cabinet is not substantially greater than a replacement 4ohm speaker for the existing cabinet.

So, get a second 8 ohm cab and run them in parallel, which gives you the 4 ohms you want with the movement of twice as much air. What you end up with (assuming the numbers you posted are correct) is two 15s being pushed at 100W each, but twice as much air.

Yes, all true. Besides, the volume difference between the 8 ohm cab vs an identical 4 ohm cab would be near zero. Adding the 2nd matching cab will net you +6dB.

Beautiful!. You guys rule! Now that that's settled...

Would a GK115 sbx II match up OK with the other GK cabinet. I think the main difference is the sbx has a tweeter. I think... This is it, and it's pretty close to home:

GK Gallien 115SBX-II 1-15 Bass Cab

If the only difference is the tweeter, it would make a perfect match.

If I'm not mistaken, the SBX stuff was/is sealed. Is the RBS series sealed or ported?

I believe you're correct, silky smoove. Would that have an effect on these cabinets matching up?

I tried to find another 115RBS, but no luck here, ebay or Craigslist.
