8 ohm to 4 ohm cabinet

Sign in to disble this ad
The amp I have is capable of a 4 ohm load and the cabinet I'm using has an 8 ohm Emilar 15. I want to stay with a single 15", I don't need 2-15's. Are there any 4 ohm 15" I could use or are there any options to get to 4 ohms with the Emilar, maybe adding an 8 ohm mid range wired in parallel to it. Tom

Three things:

1. There are very few 4-ohm 15s available.

2. The cab was designed specifically for the chosen speaker. Putting in a different one will be a crapshoot.

3. Installing a midrange would require a crossover. The cab would still remain at eight ohms.

So here's the question: What problem are you solving with a four-ohm cabinet? If your answer is "to get all the wattage from the amp," forget it. Even if the cab could take twice the power (it almost certainly can't), you'll only see a 3dB increase in volume.

Add a second identical cab and you'll have all the loudness you want.

It doesn't work that way. A mid-range will require a crossover and that keeps the impedance at 8Ω.

The only way to make your box 4Ω is to change out the speaker for a 4Ω one. To do that you would have to find a driver that will work well in the size of box you have. Not such a simple task though it appears that the Eminence 3015 will work well in a wide selection of volumes.

Best advice

More speakers equals more sound. Consider this, turn the balance on your home or car stereo fully left or right, notice the dropout in sound and volume ( regardless of stereo separation or use the fader in a 4 speaker setup) then turn back to center and notice the increase in sound. The same applies with speaker cabs.

Your amp is capable of four ohms so I would suggest adding another cab. I would also recommend trying a 410 cab as this may add a little less boom as opposed to a 15 cab and give a perceived sense of increased volume. In the past I always used 15's and 18's but I have switched to all 10's and noticed a increase in volume and clarity in bass response but I lost some of the deepness from larger speakers but I like the trade off better.

I should have explained my reason for 4 ohms. I need more volume when I play outside. So, I thought I could take full advantage of the amps output. I guess my solution would be to get another 15.
