Question 800RB Output Question

Sign in to disble this ad
Just picked up an old 800RB and I'm just wondering about the outputs...

On the back it's got two outputs for the low amp section, and one for the high. I'm only using the low section. Each output says 8ohms with a 4ohms combined thing above both in the middle.

Now, if I'm running a single 4ohm cabinet. Can I safely run it off one of the low amp outputs, even though it reads 8ohms? Also will I be getting the full 300 watts this way??

Thanks!

Yes. Just don't use the other low section jack combined with it, since it will then be below the recommended 4Ωs, but you probably already knew that. Also never use the high section with anything less than 8Ωs, but you probably already knew that too.

You got it right. Just make sure the switch is set to full range and not bi-amp.

800RB's rock - especially when ya bi-amp. Try and get a hold of a mid driver + maybe a horn in a small box, or build something like this:

so you can use the other half of the amp.

They are one of the most sensible amps to bi-amp with. On 8ohm loads the low half gets twice the power of the high half, the crossover has a range that will let a woofer do what it's best at and accomodate pretty much whatever mids are out there, and you can add a second woofer to the bottom if you really need to fill a room and the mid/high will keep up.

Not to mention they're one of the most reliable and good sounding amps made.

Just got mine back from GK where it had rejuvenation treatments... new power supply and fresh pots and buttons.

For what I paid I could'a bought a new amp. Glad I didn't.

GK service rocks old school just like the 800RB - and on top of my fEarful 1515/66+1 it gets crazy loud.

The 300 watt amp section has a minimum load impedance of 4 ohms (that can either be one 4 ohm cabinet, two 8 ohm cabinets, four 16 ohm cabinets, etc.)

The 100 watt amp section has a minimum load impedance of 8 ohms.

Do not be tempted to run the HI amp at 4Ω. It'll blow. If you are only using the low amp get a dummy plug and keep it in the high amps output socket. It's very easy to slip up if you're in a rush.
