Question 810 & V4B restoring help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,
I just recived 4yds of tolex 3 of grille cloth plus corners I ordered from Fliptops to refinish cabinet and head and I could use some guidance. mine has handles (3) along the right vertical side.
1) what should I use to remove the old tolex?
2) The tolex is dressed and tucked under the triangular pieces (see pic) that the grill attaches to, how do I remove those? (looks like they were stapled and maybe glued)
3) Are the speakers screwed right to the wood, or do they go into threated nuts?
4) does anyone know how to remove those side handles?
5) after I sand, fill and ready the cabinet, what is the pattern to cut and fit the tolex?

I know I'm asking a lot but any help and or suggestions your experience can offer will be most appreciated. I want it to do it right. txs
Los.

1. a paint scraper and a good adhesive remover and lots of it to get the glue off, then sanding until it's all gone and the wood is clean. as for pulling off the tolex, i do it by hand and try not to rip it so you can save it to trace out the new pattern. wear gloves with the adhesive remover.

2. most like stapled. you'll find out when you get there.

3. to the wood.

4. inside the cab you should find the nuts for the side handles.

5. the one you took off. use it to make the new pattern.

if removing the tolex is really stubborn (which it shouldn't be), you can always use a heat gun to loosen up the glue. i've have to do that on more than few cabs, but not ampegs.

the speakers are screwed right into the wood, and the handles have nuts inside the cab.

Thank you Johnk_10, Got a heat gun on stand by. Next weekend will be the beginning of the project. I'll take some pics for posterity and to post here.

you'll need a clutchhead bit to get the speakers out, unless somebody changed them already.

The handles come off from the inside. It's a 1/4 20 stud underneath the nickel cover. don't try to take the covers off the handles, it'll only lead to heartache.....gotta take the speakers out. at least you do on a squareback.

The cups are pressed in.

Good luck.

The feet cups might be stapled in also. You should be careful when taking them out as not to bend them. And most important take your time and don't rush it. Some helpful things to have when doing this would be a small roller to use applying the tolex, an electric upholstery stapler, a sharp knife (one of those snap blade ones work well), good scissors, 4' straight edge,

Thank you for the heads up... I didn't pay much attention to the screws when I took the photo, I'll check it out this weekend. good looking out on the on the handles and ....yes it is a squareback cabinet... I'll take photos and document my progress, hopefully not too many mistakes...

Thanks for all the tips. You're right about the cups they're in there with a couple of very small staples which I'll try pulling with a needle nose plier, for excact cutting I have some X-ACTO knives and blades, The electric stapler I'll have to buy... maybe they rent them at home depot?
