I have an old Harman Kardon "Commander" PA head with a pair of 8417's in it that are I believe are starting to crap out. I've been trolling around here and consulting the oracle but I can't find a vendor that sells these tubes. Any help? |

IIRC they are bigger than 6550's or KT88's.
You can still buy them on ebay, for about $40 or so for a single one.
8417's could do 100w per pair. So I'm not sure if 6550's are really good drop ins...

I'd rather get it serviced and the tubes replaced. |

What WOULD be a good conversion? As far as i know, 8417's are quite a bit bigger than 6550's... but you are the one with the real experience, not me.

Both the GE and Sylvania tubes had no problems in it. Whatever the modern lore says, I remember that Sylvania made almost all the Phillips and GE tubes as well as their own, so I'd personally call it a wash.
Edit: checked, not almost, all
