Question 8x10 lack of highs?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 8x10 cab from Basson, it is A MONSTER! it blows me away with the lows that it delivers, but i noticed it doesn´t give me the high tone i am looking for, i mean is it really a problem that it doesn´t have a Driver? i need to feel the sound of the steel strings!!! i get my tone on other amplifiers like fender bassmans and gallien. I have a Genz-Benz ShuttleMax12.0 a 1200 watts hybrid amp, FET and Tubes... i really need some help, tell me if the answer is getting another cab, or if changing the tone on my amp would be the answer, i really need help!

you got a cab designed to do insane lows. the tradeoff is you don't get highs. it's pretty much simple as that.

I've never played through a Basson, but the concensus I've heard from pretty much everyone who has is that their enclosures have great low-end response but seriously lack in the upper register.

I played through different Basson cabinets for many years. I had the 8x10 and the 4x10's. The best response i was able to get tonewise from one was when i ran a Titan V12 head with the trebel knob cranked to about 3 oclock. That rig would cut through anything but when i got new cabinets (the weight killed me) i really discovered the differance.

of course! but what to add is the problem. you have a cab that goes so low and requires so much power that adding a regular bass cab would be useless. you could add a small cab with a couple mid drivers...but it would use a fraction of the power of the basson so you'd need to have a separate amp for it. the cheap thing is to add a tweeter box, but you'll end up with a big hole in your upper mids, plus i doubt you'd have bought that cab if you liked tweeters.

what i would add if i were you is a guitar combo and roll off all the low end on it.

it's funny i read this thread today. i actually tried an 8x10 bassoon today at a guitar center. i noticed the highs were almost not even there. even when i did slap bass, it still sounded a little boomy. and i was playing through an ampeg head and almost had the treble all the way up! then i switched the head to an 8x10 ampeg while leaving it on the same setting as i had on the bassoon and the highs were unbearably loud on the ampeg! so yeah. through very recent experience, those cabs are designed for low end and then some.

So crankig up highs on my amp, and even adding a eq pedal, wouldn´t solve my problem right? btw thanks for all the info i bought this thinking on Motley Crue´s sound, but i noticed Nikki Sixx just goes loud as hell and punchy, i expected more Duff Mckagan like tone... that tells me i should have choosed Gallien or fender Bassman... anyway i´ll try with an active bass and using my tube channel overdriven

well maybe cranking highs might work. worth a shot, anyway. and it beats buying more stuff.
