Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone heres the rundown. I play in a hardcore/metal band (think ABR and DAD) and I'm looking to get a new rig. Right now I'm basaically looking at ampeg, basson, and mesa but I'm open to suggestions. Do you have a good 8x10 or any experience playing one for this kind of style? (open to head suggestions too
Thanks

The Mesa, Aguilar, and Genz-Benz Uber 8x10 would be the first cabs I checked out if I just had to have an 810.
You may also consider a 412 (or 2x212) by the same makers.

Some people find that they lack lows, though this hasn't ever been a complaint from me, and i rock a low A playing post-rock/metal. i was able to pick up both cabs on craigslist for a pretty good price.
everything you are looking at is quality though. +1 on aguilar db stuff.
if go with basson, you have to make sure that you have enough power to drive it, as the magnets are huge. people have had problems when not giving them enough juice.

While i don't play that kind of metalcore, i have played WITH countless bands of that vein. Haha, between 2002 and 2005 i think my crusty screamo band (think Pg99/Majority Rule mixed with Reversal of Man/Backstabbers Inc.) played with the entire Eulogy Records roster... that's what we get for having that straight edge label
I digress...
At first i would agree with Burlington on the 6x10... but after taking a listen and seeing you have 2 guitarists, i think an 8x10 would, indeed, be a better fit. However... if your guitarists are just using single 4x12s or less... a 6x10 MAY work... but i still think the 8x10 would make you happier.
Mesa is THEE amp/cab brand for your style of metalcore/deathcore, so that's what i would look into first. What kind of head are you playing out of?
I would actually advise AGAINST 2 4x10s if you plan on touring. IME, 2 4x10s (or 2 1x15s in my case) take up more van/trailer space than a single 8x10/2x15. If it has wheels... all the easier!
Aside from Mesa... I have a long-standing love for Peavey, and use one of their early 90's 8x10s in a hardcore band i'm in now (Deadguy/Undertow style) and it's awesome. You may also want to check out:
-Newer Peavey VB 8x10 http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....net?sku=582113
-Acoustic (decent cab... may not have the aesthetic you want) http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....net?sku=501094
-Marshall (also a decent cab... higher wattage rating than the acoustic) http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ku=604011#used
-Markbass (a liiiiittle pricey, but these things are STUPID light) http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ku=601105#used
-Ampeg... you can NEVER go wrong with ampeg...
I'd still probably suggest looking for something used though, scour the local CL (i'm sure, being from OC there's probably rad stuff there) and Mesa will probably make you the happiest.
Also, check the TB classifieds ( http://www.talkbass.com/forum/search...archid=3603231)
Good luck!

I don't play the new school hard core, I play a mix of New York Hard Core and metal; but GK has always sounded great for the style I play. With that said my friend's band Boy Sets Fire used Ampeg and there tone was always killer. Try as many amps and cabs as you can and find your sound.

my 810-E's, I also have a Fender 810-Pro which is built great with a metal mesh on front. I got this one to go with the Fender 300 tube head but the cab with go with all heads. |

Would love a Fender 300T on top of a Fender 8x10 pro.
Also, +1 to the thought of 4x12s. A couple bassists i know in extremely heavy bands are using 4x12s these days (mainly Peavey and Marshall), the ones that use a full stack of 2 4x12 produce some of the most intense bass tones i have heard from a heavy band...
...I've been considering this jump as well... love my 15s and 18s too much though

I know quite a few people that use their 4x10s and i agree that the sound is awesome.
Most of these are proggy or indie guys though... i could see how they might punch through a heavy setting.

I've seen some extremely low prices for them in decent condition in local sales via websites like Craigslist. We're talking in the $400 range sometimes, so if it's something you're already considering, that could be a great deal. It may or may not be the best fit for you sonically, though I know plenty of bassists in your genre who use them, but just passing on that info for what it's worth. |

Take a look @ my website www.escutcheonmedia.com where my Tonehenge 2 x 2 x15" rig is depicted on the Home Page. That is for BASS. I constructed it in 1974 as a stereo bass rig to go with the Rick stereo bass guitar. The loudspeakers are 421/8H Altec Bass speakers. |

Yes, it's only a 6x10, but it weighs less than 100 pounds and gets really loud. My rock/metal band sometimes plays stoopid loud, but if I give my NV610 900 watts it can keep up.
The biggest caveat is that it's a vintage style cab and has no tweeter, but for metal you probably don't need that. Even without a tweet the cab can get bright and aggressive, with highs up to 5kHz. I play BEADG five string through mine, often with overdrive. |

Even though I'm a huge Aguilar fan (and use it in my prog rock/metal band) if you want an 8x10 cab I would look into the new Peavey Tour Series 810, 3200 watts program power and only 111lbs!
So I'm thinking a Peavey Tour Series 810 and a Peavey VB-2 (tube) head would work well for you. The whole rig would only weigh around 150lbs and not break the bank.
