AC/DC tribute band - a manageable rig

Sign in to disble this ad
My buddy is in an AC/DC Tribute band and this last weekend they did a show with a good size pa plus loan of 8x10" cab etc. It was great but now he is faced with a buying a rig that is both capable and will fit in the car. $1500.00 budget.

Any ideas most welcome

Ampeg SVT (used) and Mesa Boogie 1x15. Its what Cliff actually uses, IIRC.

Used, you'd be under $1500 if not exactly that.

cliff uses two svt 4 pros and two 810e's. a budget version of that rig could be an svt 3 pro and 410he.

Yes, but IIRC, he said in an interview thats his stage rig, but the real tone comes from a mic'd Mesa 1x15 back stage.

Nope, i couldn't find one.

Maybe i heard it here... but i am pretty sure Cliff used Mesa Boogie as his stage rig in the 80's up into the early 90's.

Then again, IHMO, he has sounded great since powerage with a ton of different sounding basses and amps.

He also had a Superbass with 4x15's WAYYYY back in the day.

Ever think about a Line6 Lowdown 750 and 2-4 x 10 cabs. Line6 has the modeling that sounds VERY good and just about the tones you will need....or if not 2-4x10's then how about a 6x10? easier to carry and powerful enough for a bigger sound. Just a thought.
Easily under $1500.

When faced with the same issue with my SVT-4PRO/810 setup, I ended up going with a Markbass LMIII and an Aguilar GS410 for my larger gigs. Has worked out well for me so far, but it may not be what your friend is looking for. I figure it never hurts to share what worked for me!

cliff absolutely did use mesa in the 80's and early 90's. don't know for how long, though. i know he used it on the razor's edge tour.

honestly, though, cliff's tone is not hard to get out of a lot of different stuff. i've seen him use a precision, a stingray, ampeg, mesa, even saw him use a steinberger a few times, and it always sounds like cliff. just get a good clean tone with not too much treble and a boost around 125 hz and you're there.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like Ampeg and Mesa mix is the ticket

There is an Eden WT800 going at a great price. DO you think this would suit?

I suggested the MB but that was more about portability!

For 1500$ you can find good deals among used gear.

Tech21 sansamp RBI + Solidstate power amp + a pair of ampeg 8 ohms Cab (2x410 or 115+410)

This and possibly replace the Sansamp with a Line 6 BassPODXTLive.

What he said. I love my RBI preamp, paid $150.00 for it used a few years back and I've used it quite a bit. I also have a BBE BMax pre that I got new off Ebay a few years back for $200.00 that sounds pretty cool and is cleaner sounding than the RBI. I have found some pretty killer gear at great prices.

CrownXLS 1000 power amps are $299.00 @ GC (1100 watts @ 4 ohms bridged mono, 11lbs). http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com...Amp?sku=485459. I'm eyeballing one myself to use instead of my Stewart World 1.2 amp. I inevitably have to let people use my rig and since my amp doesn't have a fan it has overheated and shut down like it did at the end of my bands last song at my last gig (Thermal Protection, no biggie, just needed to cool off a bit) after 3 other bands had used my amp.

A 4 space rack, couple of used Avatar or Ampeg Cabs and I'd say you'll shake them all night long.

I suggest an Ampeg SVT-4Pro with an Eden 410xlt. I will get you that rock sound and enough volume for BIG stages. I find the 410xlt to be pretty equivalent to an 810 fridge.

+1.
Big sound, but not so big that it can't sit in the mix between the guitars and drums.

What you need is a Holden WASP.
All of them used WASP's at some time back when Evans played bass.
