The Acoustic Amp Club - Third Time's A Charmer

Hoping spmeone can help please. I've searched here onTB, as well as through Google and ebay so far with no luck. My question is that I have a chance to buy what is listed as a late 60's or early '70's Acoustic 610 cab. The person tells me that it was marketed for bass but guitar sounds good through it too. I want it for bass. I can't find mention of a bass 610 cab from Acoustic, but I do find mention of a 610 for guitar. Anybody know if a 610 Acoustic bass cab exists, and how I would best tell the difference between one for guitar and one for bass through asking questions over the phone? Any help much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

as far as I know, they never made a 610 bass cab, so i'm pretty sure that that is a guitar cabinet.

I believe that is the Acoustic 104 cabinet which was marketed as being for lead guitar or for bass. There is a 150 head and a 104 cabinet in a rehersal studio in my town and the couple times I've used it I was turned off. The cabinet is shallow (not deep) and sealed. The tone is all mids, no bottom. Whenever we use that studio I bring my own amp now. See link below:

Thanks much! The pic shows it looking pretty shallow, as you describe. It also looks like the pic of the 104, although the grill cover has been replaced on it. I certainly don't need a 610 that is mid- heavy! I think I will pass on this one. It might explain why he's selling so cheaply ($180). IMO, not really. for example the 260 had a fiberglass horn in the cab, and the 360 was a folded horn 18" cab.

Yep.

The early amps were dual designed. The 150 and 150B are, from what I understand, the same circuit, except for the 150B's lack of an effect (reverb, vibrato) channel. They handle both bass and guitar equally.

I really need an amp for the house and small/medium gigs where the 2x15 rig is just too much. And I am trying to start giving bass lessons again and the dual inputs is a nice feature. Not having the cash for a speaker cab, I jumped on this when it popped up on CL the other day. I got a rad little Ampeg Scrambler clone in the deal as well and I didn't have to spend any cash, which is always a good thing. At least this way I am playing at home again and not just staring at my 230. I'm still working on the whole back up head situation.

I'm saving my cash right now so that I can make that happen, but I definitely need to get a job first (or hopefully start making better money with my band) before I can justify a back-up head purchase. I'm thinking about a Genz-Benz Streamliner 900. Mainly for the increase in clean headroom. I absolutely LOVE the grind/distortion tone of my 370, but it doesn't do clean at the volumes that we play at. Thats normally ok, but there is no middle ground. It is either off or destruction. A couple of times on this past tour we had to turn down absurdly low (I know, just stop playing awful clubs, that was my idea as well) and the amp might as well been off for all the presence it had . sucks. I'm debating on what to do with it actually. I love that sound - easily the best amp I have ever played through - but it just doesn't clean up enough. Well it IS touch sensitive and when I play really soft it cleans up a lot, but never all the way. If that makes sense. I'm going to try to lower the output of my bass to see if I can avoid slamming the input as much as I do (I plug into the padded 2nd input, BTW) and still get the volume I need out of the 370. Stay tuned.

Also, for those that are interested, this thing (136) sounds freaking killer. Really close in gain structure/tonality when compared to my 370 (nice to have it in a "smaller" package). And this is is LOUD. Not that I'd expect anything else from old ACC stuff, but still. LOUD. Easily loud enough for a cover band type situation, and it has an extension cabinet out. I can imagine if you felt the need you could add a 2x10 or another 1x15 and you could slay small children.

Totally different tone from the 230, which was much warmer and wooly when compared with the 370.
