I was reading in my manual for my Acoustic B200 and it talked about distortion. Then
here
Musicians Friend talks about the distortion.
Does this mean its safe to crank my gain knob up and make the preamp clip?

Yup. The preamp will clip and send that signal to the final and it comes out the speaker(s).
The amp is designed to handle it. I was worried too, but I don't get to use distortion much that way.
But, YES - it is there to use if you like.
