Acoustic B200 vs. Ampeg SVT CL or Orange AD200B

Sign in to disble this ad
Can the Orange or SVT even compare to the B200 sound wise?

I ask as I currently have a little B200 combo amp & like it for the fact that it has a 15 inch speaker & is plenty loud enough for my band. I use the Gain & Master set at about 25% (or 9 o'clock). It has a very usable EQ section & sounds great for the price.

Of course I know they are in two completely different categories for various reasons. I know that the Orange & SVT CL are both much louder & both tube as opposed to solid state amplifiers.

I've gone through three of these little B200 combos (currently using the third) under warranty & am looking for a major upgrade as I'd say they aren't the most reliable or well built amps for my scenario.

I've been considering the SVT CL head & a Fliptops, tweeter-less, 1x15 cab. I hadn't even really thought of Orange until a few days ago when I saw one come up in the classifieds here at TB. Now I'm considering the AD200B & a 15in, tweeter-less, Orange cab.

What I'd like to know is if anyone here has experience with all mentioned amps or at least the B200 & one of the mentioned tube amps & would like to voice some opinions on how they compare in sound. Can the two mentioned tube amps sound similar to the B200? Is one closer to the B200 sound than the other? Again, I know these are apples to oranges (haha, no pun actually intended) comparisons but thought I'd ask.

******* NOTE: Apologies for the unfinished & poorly worded post last night. I didn't actually think that it even posted until I was looking through the forum this morning & saw folks thinking that I was joking! Sorry guys, I meant no harm. I simply was trying to get my thoughts out & accidentally hit post I guess while simultaneously loosing my cell service. Figured I'd redo my post this morning. Hope you all understand! *******

In case there isn't a joke, I currently own a B200 and have owned a SVT CL in the past. These products are in two very separate categories. I wish I still had my SVT CL plus an 8x10 cab. Hands down there is no comparison to the power and tone of that combination. Regarding the B200, it is the most powerful and versatile combo amp I have EVER owned and use it for all of my professional gigs and practice (of course I have FOH PA support). For small shows it is plenty by itself. It is also very portable. But don't get me wrong, an SVT with a matching cab would offer god-like tone in a higher class.

+1 on this being a set-up joke. I won't fall for it, know what you are talking about, form a real question worth answering and before that read all of the threads (if you can ) pertaining to your topic. Acoustic anything amps are starter equipment entry level stuff. Why stir it up with your comparison....Sounds like you just want to post for the heck of it.

Thanks Roundwound for that, good stuff. I completely agree with you as well in regards to the B200. Sounds great for what it is. Did you happen to ever play that SVT CL through a single 15 cab by any chance?

Waleross & Cheezewiz, I'm aware of all this. I can read as well, but just barely! I have been doing loads of research on here & on the internet in general. As I edited I my original post to reflect, the original posting was a complete accident & definitely not a joke, although I guess I could see how it could have been perceived that way. Again, apologies if you felt it was.

The SVT CL would need to be connected to either a 4 or 2 ohm load, meaning, if you want to use a single 15" cab, it'll have to be 4 ohms. Most I know of are 8 ohms. Something to consider.

Thanks Rickenboogie. Right you are. That's exactly why I'm strongly considering the Fliptops. Small, 1x15, 4 ohms, real ply (birch), 450 watt speaker. It's the only one I've really been able to find that meet the requirements AND looks right (IMO) with an SVT head.

Obviously, it is a huge increase in price, but a huge increase in tone and quality. I don't think you'd regret it for a second.
