active monitor/speaker instead of a combo?

Sign in to disble this ad
i always use my vt bass as a preamp into a combo peavy max115 bass amp. now this bass amp is expensive, dull sounding, really heavy and not one bit portable really. so i am wondering why not get a powered monitor with a 12" speaker which will have more power, it is much lighter and has a flatter brighter pa like response which i want and is actually cheaper!

since i will be using my vt bass as a amp+cab sim and it has a low z out i think i will be fine. but before i go for it, i'd like to ask what are the possible downsides?

this is what i may get
basic400
or basic 200

these monitors are 400w and 200w each which is way more power. i can sell my combo which is kinda useless when it comes to portability and get one of these and still save some money

To put it simply, A decent bass combo will give you better bass response.

Compare the specs on:
http://dbtechnologies.com/index.php?...0&tx_amdbt_pi1[category]=19&tx_amdbt_pi1[product]=178&cHash=048dbc26b8

with:
http://www.markbass.it/products.php?...&cat=3&vedi=41

Similar product but the freq. response goes down to 45hz, not 65hz.

i use a mackie srm350 as a small amp for acoustic writing sessions and quiet stuff.
***i would not use this as my primary amp. i have it, as part of a PA system. it is functional for when i don't need an 810, but it doesn't sound like a bass amp. fwiw, i run a sans amp bddi in front of it.

someday i'll have something better (b15 or a walkabout), but i'm making the best of what i have.

i dont need an amp for jamming or gigs i just go direct to the pa and there is always a bass amp for the backline. i am wondering if i could do away with having a bass amp at all
