Add a third Aguilar GS112?

Sign in to disble this ad
My gig rig uses 2 Aguilar GS112 cabs. They work fine, get good comments from the audience.

The only thing that I don't like is that the top cab sits low. On tight stages where I have to stand close to the cab, it's hard to hear. A third cab would put one speaker in hearing range. Oh, standing the two on end isn't an option since my amp is too wide.

A third cab is more to carry, and if I'm just using it as a spacer, I won't bother.

So, for any of you that use 3 GS112 - what are the benefits over 2?

I have 2 GS-112's and here's how I solved the problem yer having. I went to my local Daddy's Junky Music store and bought 16 large Peavey-branded rubber feet and turned my Aggie's on their ends opposite the handle and mounted 2 rubber feet in each corner on each cab and the when I use 2 cabs for a gig, I stack them end to end and the height is perfect. When I use just one cab I also stand that on end but up on a double milk crate and it fits perfectly.
The only thing that looks a little out of whack is the Aguilar name badge as it's rotated 90 degrees but I couldn't care less about that. I'd recommend doing that over trying 3 cabs. Yer gonna have nothing but problems trying to get the impedence's to match up properly without blowing something up. )-(

If you have a rack style amp case just change the stack order.

GS112 on the bottom. Amp rack on top of that. Second GS112 on top of the amp rack. Solves your height problem with no additional gear.

About 50%

You could try tilting the top cabinet. Shouldn't need a huge angle if it's already elevated a bit.

Two of these would be 4 ohms ... unless your amp can output to less than 4 ohms without shutting down (or burning up!) you need to think of another solution.

QFT. pick up a couple rubber amp feet. put two on the front end of your top cab, and leave the rear edge without the feet. should put a bit of angle on the cab and bring projection up toward your ears.

OP here. Not a trick question. I thought I recalled some pictures of guys running 3 of them. Wanted to hear from them if they felt the third cab was worth it.

It could be for show, to hear themselves because of height, or because they felt that they needed the additional cab for clarity/SPL. It could be their drink was at an inconvenient height.

There's a GS112 on the local Craigslist that I'm trying to convince myself to pick up. But, it's rather expensive if the only benefit is that of a spacer.

Oh, and don't worry about the 2.7 ohms that the 3 cabs will present as a load. My amp can handle it. If I didn't get that right, my EE degree would be revoked

Ok Ok
I am not using the GS112, so no direct experience of that rig

But I use a modular rig of 1-4 of the same cab
If 2 cabs cant do the job, then I use 3 or 4 (mostly for outdoor)

IME, going from 2 to 3 has a noticeable increase in perceived volume
just raising or angling the 2 cabs will not give you the extra in the deep end

provided that you like the tone of the 2 cab enough, 3 is a natural choice
