Add a tweeter box?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a GK 800RB into a SWR Henry 8x8 and was thinking of running the high end into a separate tweeter box.

Any recommendations? I don't want to get into serious money in case I don't like it.

Thanks, Bob

real easy, get one with a few piezo tweeters in it. You'll want a volume control knob on the little box but no crossover is needed. That's the great thing about cheap piezo's!

I am running a DIY external piezo box w 3 cts KSN1165a tweeters. This is a picture of the current box below though I am working on a concave design which is said to increase dispersion.

As far as volume control, to my knowledge there is nothing you can do to pad or control piezos without giving them resistance which would call for a crossover.

If you would want to run a standard magnetic voice coil tweeter like the one you listed you would need a high pass filter in the box to keep the low frequencies from frying the tweeter.

Don't the cheap piezo's have horrible sound quality?

That's what I am afraid of. There are a lot of them with 6 peizos for $50. on ebay. There is a separate volume control for HF on the GK as well as a xover.

If used properly they sound very good. OTOH I've never seen a commercial product that used them properly. You must use at least two, they must be vertically arrayed, and they must be wired as series pairs or series/parallel groups for adequate power handling. The worst possible configuration has them horizontally arrayed and parallel wired, but that's how they're always done.
The only reason why piezos have a bad reputation is because, because of their low cost, they're most often seen used in low end cabs designed by persons with no acoustical engineering background whatsoever, with inevitable poor results.

One thing to keep in mind is the crossover range of the 800RB is from 100Hz to 1000Hz. Most "tweeters" operate at a higher frequency than the 1000Hz limit, so there would be a large hole in response if using the amp's bi-amp feature.

The 800RB's bi-amp feature is excellent, IMHO, when crossing to a mid/high cab, such as a 6.5"-8" ( + a tweeter if desired).
I used mine for years crossing a large, 15" cab to a 2x12" cab at 250-300Hz.

Always remember though to keep the impedance at 8 Ohms or more when using the amp's "hi range" section, as a lower impedance will likely harm the amp.

Look into the Fearful Headcase. That would fit what you are looking for. A Mid Driver + Tweeter/Horn in a Rack case. It would fit nicely on top of your cab and stack nicely. You may even be able to integrate 800RB and the speaker elements into an 8 unit Rackcase, or the like.

Both Trace Elliott and Hartke USED TO build cabinets like this based on 5" drivers or such...

Hartke's 405 XL series 4x5"
Traqce Elliott Birght Box 4052h

Bothj would probably work with the xover you have in yoru 800Rb.
