Question Adding a tweeter/horn to a GK Backline 4x10...hows it done?

Sign in to disble this ad
so i found a 4x10 GK Backline on craigslist ofr next to nothing and picked it up. The low tones are awesome on this cab, but I'm not getting much on the higher ones. theres not much sustain, they aren't as loud, and definitely not as full, so im thinking i need to add a horn or tweeter to this thing. Anybody know how that works? and what i would be looking at $$$ wise?
i'm kinda a novice when it comes to tinkering on gear, so i would probably have someone do it for me.
let me know what you guys think. new to this forum board thing and just looking for some advice. party.

you need to cut a hole in the baffle to fit it, then you need a crossover mounted inside to keep lows and mids from blowing it. not a hugely complex deal, but way more complex than just throwing a tweeter in, and certainly not worth the effort with one of those cabs.

nor do i think that's the answer. the things you're looking for out of your cab come from the woofers and the bass, not the tweeter. honestly, and i know you don't want to hear this, but it's just not a good cab.

oh, i know its not a good cab. its just for practice, but id like to get as much out of it as possible. it was something i was considering if it was an easy process, but its probably not worth the hassle to work on a cab this caliber.

thanks for the input.

Step 1. List cabinet on craigslist.
Step 2. Buy cabinet with horn

Seriously, modding a particle board cab with 20 dollar chinese drivers? Talk about your waste of time. You'll kill what little resale value it has and possibly ruin it.

It won't really even be valid practice to be honest since the material of quality cabs is much different.

If you want to practice, buy a sheet of 4x8 Arauco from lowes for like 25 bucks and get to work building your own cabinet

I had one (older model, bought off Craigslist) briefly and while it didn't have a tweeter, I thought it did a decent job of giving some semblance of high frequencies. It wasn't muddy at all. I was actually surprised! I only got rid of it due to it's weight and not being able to fit in my trunk!

Re-visiting.......

It'd be nice if GK offered a coaxial driver similar to the Bag End drivers for their tweeter-less cabs!
