Adding a tweeter to a practice amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm wondering if this can be done easily. It's my understanding that tweeters have such low resistance that their added load is negligible. Could you put a tweeter in-line with the regular speaker somehow (before? after? parallel?) with a high pass filter or crossover or something?

Not asking if it SHOULD be done, or asking if there's a better thing I could be doing... just wondering if it COULD be done, and if so, how much money do you think it would cost me.

And because you're going to ask... think Fender Bassman 25, early 2000's model.

Hi.

Perfectly doable, You'll need a cross-over of some sort as well.

As for the price, from about $10 to more than the amp is worth. The parts only of course.

Compression tweeters have regular 4 or 8 ohm loads. Their impedance, however, tends to reach those numbers in a frequency range where your full range driver is at a very high impedance. You should still use a crossover though.

Peizos can be connected with no crossover because they are not a resistive load. However, in practice they tend to distort if you don't cross them over.

The challenge in adding a tweeter to a combo is that you have no frequency response and impedance charts to allow you to match the tweeter to the full range driver, but you could use a generic crossover with an attenuator as a workaround.
