Advice needed - 4 x10 to pair with a Thunderfunk

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

Thinking of getting a 4x10 to use with my Thunderfunk 550B. Currently using a Hartke 2x10 but not really liking what i'm hearing. Planning to sell off the 2x10 and get a 4x10.

What cab would pair well with the TF? Unfortunately, locally I don't have that many options.

These are the brands that are available locally

- GK
- Hartke
- Markbass
- Aguilar
- SWR
- EBS
- Genz Benz
- Ampeg
- Orange

The Aguilar DB line sounds VERY good with the Thunderfunk, especially the DB112's. The 410 is heavy, but sounds quite good, and somewhat similar to the Berg HS410 (discontinued, now called the HD410), which would also be a very good choice (maybe the best choice). If you are looking for a lightweight option, the discontinued Bergantino AE410 (which sometimes comes up used on this site) is magnificent sounding with the 550b and also the 750a.... tight, punchy and very articulate. That was the best match (along with the DB112) that I experienced with my Thunderfunk.

Edit: Never tried the GS410 with the TF. I hated the GS112's with it (everything was in the wrong place with that cab relative to the TF.... deep low end, polite mids, and a big hole in the upper mids prior to the tweeter kicking in), but that doesn't mean the GS410 won't work nicely.

The Thunderfunk really sings through a relatively deep and even cabinet. FWIW, my TF and Hartke 410XL pair poorly.

OTOH, I really like my TF paired with a Bergantino AE212, but it also shines with the Carvin LS1503.

Of course, there's no predicting taste. Also, given how important pairing is with heads/cabs, you really want to try out as many cabs as you can--both at polite levels and (if only briefly) at gig levels. Of the brands you list as available near you, I'd really want to try the TF with the Genz NEOX-212T.

Thanks guys. Will check our the Aguilars. They were the ones that I was most keen to look at but the price may be prohibitive. They aren't cheap here.
