Is there a way to power the speakers with another amp? That would confirm the speaker damage.

From your description (the hissing), I'm leaning towards damaged amp in some way...

I don't really have any way to check, honestly. All I can say is that is has the speak-on connection, and I'm at a loss for how to hook anything else up to/through it.

And for what it's worth, I've been having the hissing noise happen lately, previous to last night's sudden drop into complete distortion (which, admittedly, is somewhat nice, if I could only turn it off). With the right level of volume, and if I wasn't touching any part of the exposed metal (strings, bridge, knobs, etc), there would be an audible hissing noise. Not sure what that would be caused by though.
