advice needed RE a 15" bass speaker

Sign in to disble this ad
I traded a guitar for a Traynor Bassmaster mark II in beat up but working condition. The person then threw in a cabinet with a 15" speaker (blown). The cabinet is about 3 1/3 cubic feet (2x2x10") and has a horn mounted in it as well but has no back. I have to make one. So my questions are...
1. What 15 incher for this head and cabinet size?
2. Close the back or leave some portion of it open and call it vented?
3. Use the horn or not? if use then...
4. what can I use for a pot to adjust the balance of the horn?

Thanks for any help. Patrick

You might be better off getting a used, working Peavey or Ampeg 1X15 cabinet instead of buying another speaker for that one. It doesn't sound very ideal (10" deep) for bass even if you spend the time to modify it, not that it can't be done.

Do your homework on cabinets. At the least, you'll need a back on that one - and it doesn't sound like it's a good match for most contemporary 15" speakers.

You can buy a used Peavey 115BX for around $100....they're good speakers.

I am in Louisville Ky. I just ordered an EminenceLegend CB15. I got a decent price for a quality speaker.

However, the responses are making my wonder if I did the right thing. The spec sheet for the Legend CB 15 indicates that the volume in my cabinet is a little larger than recommended for a sealed cabinet but that would be easier to do on my end. I'm questioning the depth now. I thought only the volume had to be considered, not the shape of it. What to do? Patrick

The CB15 isn't a bad speaker by any stretch. Close up the back of the cab to make it a sealed box. Staple or glue some mattress foam padding to the walls and back while you're in there and see what you think of the sound. That box size is kind of an in-between, big sealed or small ported, not specifically designed for either.

If your cab is a bit larger than required, you're probably going to be OK. I have the impression that smaller would be more of a problem. Close up the back and see what it does for you - bet it works OK.

Still seal it up, load the speaker and see what it sounds like both in terms of the tone you want and it's ability to take a little juice and get a small crowd dancing.

While you're tinkering, you can throw a block or two of styrofoam or even some brick/wood blocks or whatever in the cabinet to take up some space to see what it would sound like in a smaller box without having to keep hacking up the box. If you end up porting it, just stick cardboard tube or drainpipe of different lengths in the holes to experiment with different tunings before you glue anything in permanently.
