Advice needed on setup of my rig..

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Guys, need a little advice here, I'm using a Markbass 2/10'' combo with a 2/10'' ex cab, X2 wireless, dbx166xl, tuner. Now my question is should I run...
Passive Bass-wireless-tuner-dbx-amp or
Passive Bass-wireless-tuner-amp with the use the effects send and return for the dbx ??
Any advice would be great....Thanks

I would use the FX send and return for the compressor.
Does your amp have a tuner out? If so I would take the tuner out of the signal chain

Depends - if your amp has a tuner mute button, then yeah - I'd run the tuner in the the tuner out jack - if not, I'd run it your signal, right after the X2... Definitely run the com in the effects loop - they were designed for each other...

Thanks George, amp doesn't have a tuner mute but the tuner does, and will check out the dbx through the send and return as soon as I get it....

That's why I mentioned the tuner mute thing, because Markbass doesn't seem to be big on mute buttons...

In that case, I'd run the tuner in your signal chain, in between the wireless and the amp... If you have a good tuner like a Pitchblack, Strobostomp, TurboTuner, or Polytune, there's no drawback to running it in the signal chain - due to those all being true bypass pedals...

FWIW, it's been my experience that the best use of a comp is when it's barely detectable, sound-wise... In other words, don't go crazy with using it to squash your signal, and it'll work best for you that way...

I've gotten good results using a dbx266 for bass by setting the threshold around -15db, ratio @ 3:1, attack and release @ 1 o'clock, then setting output gain around +5db - so that my level is the same whether the comp is on, or bypassed... The 166 is a pretty good comp, IMO - and can work really well for bass, kick drum, or vocals if used properly...

Hope this helps,

Thanks again George, since I've never run anything through an effects send/return do I run out out the compressor to effects send of the amp or to effects return of the amp. ??

You're only going to use one channel, and it'll work like this:

effects send from your amp into the comp's input...

the comp's output into the effects return on the amp...
