Advice: Should I get a vintage Ampeg SVT 300?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have the opportunity to pick up a vintage Ampeg SVT 300 for...$300. I'm really happy with my Mesa mPulse 600, but I've always kinda chased that SVT tone.. I'd be taking a hit in the wattage dept.

I figure I'll test it out, if it sounds good and appears to be in good condition I'll pick it up and worst comes to worst, I can probably re sell it for more than $300.

Any thoughts/concerns?

you will need a preamp if you get the svt 300. it's only the power amp of an svt. but yeah, for $300, as long as it works, i would totally hop on it!

Really? It looks like it's got all the EQ stuff and everything...I'm assuming you know much more about Ampegs than I do, but it looks like a "complete" head..maybe I'm not labeling it correctly?

oh well, something like that i wouldn't expect to sit around long at that price. but yeah, the svt 300 was the power amp by itself in a rackmountable box. it would have been a different model name otherwise. the guy could have gotten the name wrong, though.

I've got a SVTII , non-'pro' model, from '92. The manual for that amp has the SVT300 listed in it too. So basically it's the same POWER section from the SVTII, but with no pre amp(as Jimmy said).
You can find the old SVTII PRE AMP's & then you'd have the whole she-bang.

$300!!!! Hoots?!?!!? Great amps!!!

you're kidding! the vr was based on the original svt blue lines. i say "based on" because the blue line used some rather oddball tubes, and the svt-vr uses more common tubes. but since most of the pre tubes in the blue line were really just variants of the more common tubes, the vr sounds remarkably like the old ones. those heads go for quite a lot of money today, but only slightly more than the vr. $300, eh? you should back yourself up to the electric ass kicker for missing out on that one

I know. My guitarist sent it to me and was like "GO! NOW!". But of course I had to be all "Well I don't know if I really need it, I really like my mPulse 600...blah blah blah" and didn't pull the trigger..

D'oh!!!!

$300? You sure it wasn't the SVT-350H / AV?
( "Really? It looks like it's got all the EQ stuff and everything..." )

I'm positive. It didn't have the EQ sliders, it looked exactly like a SVT VR just beat up and aged.

it's got an extra fan in the middle of the back screen, but it's a blue line.

Yup, definitely get that. That is a steal. Very early SVT. The title (at least the relinked ad) said SVT 300w. - meaning 300 watts, not the model number.
