(Advise needed) Peavey Tour 700 or keep Ampeg B2R

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been shopping around fro bass heads for a while now and went into local music to check out selection. I plugged into a Peavey Tour 700 and it actually rocked! My dilema, its a Peavey and should I do it? There is definitly not alot of love for the Peavey name.

Here is my set up: Ampeg 410 HLF, Fender US Precision and Jazz basses.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

I'd take a 700Watt peavey over an Ampeg B2R any day of the week. The power and volume difference will be great..

Another way of thinking about it is... Worst of the Ampeg line vs one of the better Peaveys...

Actually, depending on who you ask, you can find a lot of love for Peavey stuff. I for one think it's great. If you see enough live music in the Georgia and Nashville markets, you'll see a lot of guys (guitarists and bassists alike) using old school Peavey amps.

Why is that? There are three main reasons that I've noticed:

1) Peavey stuff is darn near indestructable. I've got an original model TNT 115 that's been dropped more times than I care to remember and banged around for years, and that's only since I bought the thing used. It still sounds brand new (though the grill could use some new velcro to hold it on).

2) Peavey stuff is LOUD! My TNT 115 puts out a surprisingly loud ~160 watts. I once shook a considerable quantity of snow off my roof at only about 1/2 power. I also have a Classic 30 guitar amp that I've never turned up past 4 (out of 12). The old blue and black guitar and bass amps are all pretty loud, and a lot of the more experienced guys on the circuit carry them around just in case there's no PA support wherever they're playing.

3) Peavey stuff generally has a very nice, transparent clean tone. This is often more important to guitarists that'll want lots of different sounds during a single gig. Still, Peaveys usually incorporate a pretty powerful EQ section; stick a couple of your favorite pedals (or a preamp) in front of that, and you have a pretty limitless tonal palette, vintage to modern to wild and crazy noise.

Of course, nothing Peavey makes is going to be very light weight, but as long as you're not aiming for an ultralight rig, I don't think you can go entirely wrong with a Peavey.

I'm also a big fan of their basses

All that being said, are you unhappy with your B2R? If not, why make the switch?

Yes. i am just not getting a great sound from it and hate racking a bunch of gadgets to get a sound. I just wanta good clean sound. This head had such a mean growl to it. Saw two different sound spectrums (Zac Brown Band and Sevendust) playing this exact head and loved the sound.

FWIW, I nearly picked up a Tour 700 and a matching Peavey 410 about a month ago. The amp has basically the same faceplate controls and sound as my TNT 115 (old blue and silver model), just switches in the fantastic octave effect for the old, lackluster chorus. It sounds great through a 410, and your current HLF should be a great match for it. P Basses sound excellent through most Peavey's I've played, and I wish I had a Jazz bass, but for now I can't comment on that pairing.

The only reason I didn't jump on it is that I'm currently looking for something a bit smaller. It sounded great and was a joy to play! I just don't have the room for it

Go with the Peavey. You will love it compared to the lifeless tone of a B2R.

I've been using Peavey for so long, my current head is a T-max. Bought it new when it came out, haven't had problem since (Minus a new tube recently).
I vote Peavey all the way!

This - IMO, ALL of Ampeg's SS amps are pretty mediocre, and underpowered for their ratings...

BTW I have that Peavey tour, and it's actually really light IMO. I'm not sure of the exact weight, but it's one of the lightest cabs I've had experience with.

Abso-frikin-lutely! The Peavey Tour 700 is a very good head.
No hate for Peavey here. I've had great success with all of my Peavey purchases.

Well i brought it home and was bummed. It has a very sterile DI that is unaffected by anythiing that is done in the front panel. That is important. I want my cab sound and front of house sound the same. bummer unless I am doing something wrong

Is there a Pre-EQ/Post EQ button? Make sure it is the Post EQ button. Then you will get the pre-amp tone through the XLR out.
