Per Fred:
"They list at $ 2299 and are typically sold at $ 1999."
Cheers

Played a Geddy Lee through it for about 1/2 hour..
Where are they being sold at asides from Rudys?
Thanks |

I'll leave the in depth review for someone with more technical knowledge but my ears told me this amp is incredible. I was offered to take it to rehearsal but I already had my gear set up. ;(
I played a '65 (or '66) p-bass through it and was amazed at the tone and volume this amp produced. I didn't get a chance to really mess with the preamp section too much or the built in compressor.
Since it has a sub out, coupled with another cab I think this would make the ultimate mini rig of doom.
....then theres the price....and all of my hope fades away.

I did a big band rehearsal, a coffee house with a guitarist and a fairly loud fusion trio. It's clean, has plenty of power and it's easy to carry - just what I was looking for. |

I did a double take on the cost....i couldn't believe it was $1700. Then again a powered bergie is in that range.
I want to go back there with my Rob Allen Deep 5. I'd love to side and side it with a phil jones flitecase. |

The sole reason why I got it is that I needed a "small" and VERY light amp with GREAT tone and I feel that AER has excelled achieving just that in a single combo. I compared in on the spot with my EBS Gorm. It has great tone and "body", but it lacks the "wiry" slap sound (if that is what you are after, beware). It sounds very loud in spite of the small size and the relatively small amp it carries (200w). Nice detailed tone and great mids (not a lot of lows or sparkling highs, but I was aware of the design and what to expect). I will gig with it on Friday and I will let you know more

| | I play bass so others don't have to! Please see Profile for Endorsement disclosures | | Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Nashville, TN USA | | I was surprised to see the Amp One in a shop here in Nashville today. I thought I'd give it a spin, just to see what a $1999 mini-combo was all about!
Let me say right away that I'm a big tube amp kinda guy. I usually use either a 200 or 300 watt all tube amp w/ either an 8x10 or 2x15 in order to be satisfied. I also like how tubes color my sound & have a certain "power" to them. That said, these solid state mini-amps have little inherent appeal to me.
I spent 15 minutes with the Amp One & WOW!!!!! It really sounds amazing. It doesn't overdrive at all, but the tone is definitely warm & clear. The eq is very musical and the tuning of the cabinet with its' tight response add up to a shocking amount of usable volume. I've tried the MarkBass LMII as well as all of the GenzBenz minis - the AER is on a whole different level! Granted, the return on investment between the $2k Amp One and a $700 GB Shuttle set-up starts sloping off, but for sheer power projection & tone - the AER is unsurpassed.
To be honest, the Amp One isn't loud enough for 90% of the gigs I play, but it would make a perfect studio or coffee-house amp. It is expensive, but I haven't found a small combo that delivers what the AER does anywhere else.
Very impressive.... |

Originally Posted by Earl digirira, what didn't you like about it for upright? I am curious if anyone is using this amp for BG & upright? | I thought I might jump into the discussion, I know it's a little late, and we're here in the BG forum, but yes I do use the AER amp one for double bass.
Well, I just plain love it. Here's why:
*It doesn't have a tweeter, but the frequency range is complete (unlike other amps, where the 10'' speaker alone doesn't give you enough higher frequencies). The absence of a tweeter, in my opinion, avoids any of the usual accentuation of finger sounds and especially bowing noises.
*It is perfect for my double bass, which when played without an amp lacks some definition in the middle range. The bass sounds sweet acoustically but is not very loud and doesn't cut through well in a band. The amp one does accentuate the mid-range, but unlike other small e-bass amps, also has very juicy low mids and basses. So the sound for double bass is always balanced and warm and just cuts through in every situation. This was the sound I had been looking for!
I compared it with lots of other amps, and at the end I had to choose between the markacoustic and the aer. The markacoustic sounds even more acoustic than the aer, but it just doesn't help my upright to be heard in a band. So I think it depends very much on your instrument and on how you want to use it.
*On the other hand, most features on the amp are clearly ready-made for electric basses. The "colour" switch is great for chord playing on the electric, but doesn't make sense with an acoustic. The "bass-boost" grips the very low end (about 50 Hz) which you won't need on the double bass. The same is valid for the "tone-balance" section...
*...but just check out the "regular" equalizer section: I find I can adjust the sound for about any situation (room etc) and instrument (regular upright, Eminence EUB) just the way I need it. The greatest thing about it is the semi-parametric mid-range with switchable bandwidth. With a narrow bandwidth, you can eliminate feedback most effectively, very much like with a notch filter. With the wide bandwidth, you can cut the nasty frequencies about 600-700 Hz that the Eminence EUB kind of over-accentuates.
All this said, with such an overwhelming collection of features, there's something for everyone. And the price, well, look at the other comparable amps: AER Acoustic Amps, Markbass, Glockenklang, Tecamp, Genz-Benz etc. -- for such a high quality amp, it's not a lot of money.
Hope that info is interesting for some of you upright players. I'm curious to hear other opinions!

Can anyone tell how it would compare to a Bergantino ip112?
Can it compete with a good 1x12 cab being driven with a 300W top in terms of cutting and volume on a club gig? |

Offtopic: However when someone would compare the IP112 to the AER Basscube that could be usefull.

| | | I DO have a Basscube (and extension SUB cabinet) but I dont have the ip12. Send it to me and ill do a full review
The basscube has enough power fro small gigs. (I have the 400 watt version) can't even imagine what the 500 watt version does.
Combined with the sub cabinet I have 800 watts from 2 12" speakers.
But yes. This one is even more expensive. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
