Affordable one space heads?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm exploring the option of shelving my SVT4 as a backup and going with a lighter, single space head to save room in my rack.
My plan was to use my current SVT4 as a backup to my soon-to-arrive SVT-CL, but in reality thats pushing the 200lb mark and thats just for the two amps (not including road case and other rack items).
I'll be putting everything in a two tier road case eventually, foam surround on the bottom for the head and 6 rack spaces up top. And aside from weight, i wouldn't really have the room for the SVT4 anyway (I have a rack rider(1U), Avalon U5 (2U), and wireless (1U) that need to be racked as well).
I have started to notice these little micro amps popping up all over the place and wanted to know if anyone had any experience, good or bad, with them. My thoughts would be to use one as a backup in case the classic goes down on the road.

Thanks
-Evan

One space head?

The only one I know that ever existed was a Ampeg B1R. They've been discontinued for probably 15 years.

There may be something new out there but I'm not sure there's any rack mountable versions.

Wow..."1 space head" as in a complete preamp/amp in a single 1U box? I can't think of any. Saving weight seems to be your primary concern; there are tons of 2U integrated amps around these days. I have a GB Shuttle 6.0; it takes up 2U racked and even with the rack kit weighs about 5 pounds. Alternatively, you could go with a 1U preamp and 1U poweramp. Plenty of those around.

You might have to buy a bigger rack, but losing one of your Ampeg heads would still save you around 90-pounds of lug-weight.

Hm, i guess I just assumed the Headlite, GB Shuttle, etc were 1U...oh well so much for that idea

I definitely dont like the idea of hitting the road with just one amp, but i'll have to re-think my rack/backup settup

The MarkBass F1 or F500 head is a one space rack head, but you need the special rack brackets for it to work. I use an F1 in my rack as a backup, or sometimes just go out the effects send to my power amp for something different.

I go back and forth about this, but finally just left it in the rack. Saves time when I wanna switch to it on the gig, and afterall, it only weighs 4.5 lbs.

the swr headlite is actually 1/2 rack space. You could fit the headlite head and an amplite power amp both together in 1 rack space with optional mounting hardware.

The GK MB500 has rack ears available and it will only take up one space. I really like mine and considered racking it but went for the GK gig bag instead. Great amp and I prefer it greatly over the LMII/III
