My bud left his Valve King at my house a few months ago so I hooked it up to my old Carvin BR810 and it just wasn't doing it for me. I didn't spend much time with it but I could not seem to tame the top end sizzle (even with the tweeter defeated on the cab). I could feel my ears beginning to fatigue after about ten minutes of playing and tweaking. Perhaps with a little bit more effort I could have gotten a good tone but, compared to my SVT, it just was not worth it. The tone, simply put, was not pretty. It lacked low end and string noise was a major pain to deal with. I may give it another shot at some point since I may have just been really cruddy at dialing in a usable tone.
If I didn't have my SVT-VR and wanted a budget tube amp, I'd spend my time looking for a good deal on a Traynor YBA200 or Peavey
VB-2. The little 5w guitar amps seem appealing but there's something awesome about how huge the SVT sounds and
feels. I'd imagine that the Traynor or Peavey would still offer that sensation.
On the other hand, there are some people that can pull off tremendous tone with those little Epi Jr amps.
They aren't cheap but you could look at the Ashdown Little Bastard 30. It's a 30 watt all tube amp designed for bass applications. It looks like a small package, too. I'd love to try one.
