affordable valve amp

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm in the process of buying a new amp and speakers and i'm looking at valve amps as i heard they are the best sounding ones and that's what i'm looking for besides a bit of afforbability as i see many of them are over a grand including the b15 which i was initially focused on but i want to explore more possibilities

i don't gig a lot if at all and i don't mind heavy

was looking at peavey vk100 and( i think its for the electric guitar) i was wondering if it's usable with bass and if yes should i expect a pretty sound ?

are there other great small amps you guys know of ?

edit: i mean small as in affordability, don't mind a lower wattage as i don't gig but would like to rock the house if needed :P i own an american precision

How much power do you need? The Peavey VB-2 is about the cheapest readily available gig-worth tube head out there. If this won't be leaving your bedroom, the Epiphone Valve Junior was made for guitars (5W) but gets you crunchy tube goodness at low volumes.

You won't be gigging with it (probably) but five tube watts pushed hard can be awesome for bass. Plus its a hundred dollars. You almost can't afford to not try it.

Driving a power amp with it, yes. Otherwise the answer is pretty obvious.

My dislike for anything Peavey may have something to do with it, but for me the best bang for a "buck" has been the Smarvo 300W tube head. Depending of Your location, they go by the name Ashton, Eden, Fame or Smarvo.

Those amps are not without problems, but then again, what nowadays is?

Here's a thread about mine:

More love for the Valve Junior - my bedroom amp, pushing a Dr B 1260. I do want to retube it, as IMO it's a little too bright out of the box. And yeah, with only 5 watts you aren't gonna blow the walls down, but it's got tone for days.

Peavey VB2 as a head package for sure.

If you just want tube power for a tube preamp there are some great deals on used tube power amps.

Ashdown Little Bastard @ 30 watts and around $850 USD; a few vintage Fenders run around 60 watts and not cheap either.

My bud left his Valve King at my house a few months ago so I hooked it up to my old Carvin BR810 and it just wasn't doing it for me. I didn't spend much time with it but I could not seem to tame the top end sizzle (even with the tweeter defeated on the cab). I could feel my ears beginning to fatigue after about ten minutes of playing and tweaking. Perhaps with a little bit more effort I could have gotten a good tone but, compared to my SVT, it just was not worth it. The tone, simply put, was not pretty. It lacked low end and string noise was a major pain to deal with. I may give it another shot at some point since I may have just been really cruddy at dialing in a usable tone.

If I didn't have my SVT-VR and wanted a budget tube amp, I'd spend my time looking for a good deal on a Traynor YBA200 or Peavey VB-2. The little 5w guitar amps seem appealing but there's something awesome about how huge the SVT sounds and feels. I'd imagine that the Traynor or Peavey would still offer that sensation.

On the other hand, there are some people that can pull off tremendous tone with those little Epi Jr amps.

They aren't cheap but you could look at the Ashdown Little Bastard 30. It's a 30 watt all tube amp designed for bass applications. It looks like a small package, too. I'd love to try one.

From the person you heard this from go try their and see how you like it.
Go to the store and try some of the amps and forget what's inside. It's the sound that comes out that matters. Do some critical listening. Be objective. Try tube and solid state and hybrids. Buy from a store that lets you try it out and exchange it if it doesn't work out. Don't be afraid to return a few and possibly go back to an amp you tried earlier.

Define rock the house. Jamming with amplified instruments or just yourself?

My tiny little practice amp in the corner makes the house rattle. It won't keep up with amplified instruments or drums but sax, acoustic guitars and singers, no problem.

Tube amps between the valve jr. and the 200 watters?

Well, there's the Ampeg B25, though I don't know how much that costs. Then there's the Ampeg V4, at 100 watts. Really heavy and pretty loud, though.
