aging resistors

so... assuming that a resistor measures within its rating range, it is "good", even if small pieces of the outermost ceramic coating has flaked off.

right?

i mean, that is only insulation, right?

assuming it's not cracked and it measures proper my guess is it's fine . The caps are what dry up , leak and drift way out of specs IIRC .

If I saw a component in the state you describe I would replace it. Cracks allow corrosives into the resistor element and will eventually damage it.

this is what i am talking about..... the "flakes" were present. thin like paint. doesnt look like heat was a factor--- at least not the burning kind.
