So I picked up an Aguilar DB112 last week, and the same night I took it to a friends house for a jam. While the cab has GREAT tone, I found it to be surprisingly quiet.
In a week or so I was planning on getting another DB112, but I want to know from some other owners of the DB series cabs if they feel their 2 DB 112s are enough for small to medium gigs. Just for reference, I don't ever play at deafening volumes, and have not to date played with any heavy handed drummers, and have always had PA support for the larger gigs. I worried about whether or not 2 DB112s is enough for the medium gigs with no PA.
I was debating between the DB112 and the Berg AE112. In the store, I loved the sound of both, but the DB sounded a little smoother and deeper, which is what I like, too bad I forgot they have such low sensitivity ratings. The berg is 5 db more sensitive! Maybe I should have opted for the Berg? Did I made the wrong choice based on what I have said to this point?
I'm kinda boned BC the shop where I picked it up has a 15% restock fee, so I might as well sell it here on the forums and let someone get a deal if I decide to get the Bergs.
This is a 2 part post, so you should only continue reading if you are interested in why I feel the cabinet is quiet and correct me if I'm wrong. It may not be worth your time otherwise.
The same night I picked up the cab, I went to a friends house for a jam. It was a small basement, one drumset, 2 guitars through combos(line6 210 and a tubeworks 112), and some random hand percussion. My cab could not keep up. I could tell I was on the brink of farting out. I tried everything with EQ, cut bass, boost mids and highs, nothing worked. Granted it was a little loud, but I was getting NO CUT!
I do realize the sensitivity is relatively low for these cabs, and it is only a 112, but dang it couldn't keep up at all. I have a TE 30W 110 combo that I feel would have done a better job than the aggie with my GB max12 pushing it.
Since I was kind of in the corner and standing right in front of the cab, I used a combo amp that he has to put my cab on top of it for some projection (some small 110 ampeg I believe). Not only that, but the combo is smaller than the DB112 so some of my cab was hanging off the edges. I also had the cab positioned with the handle side up, so tweeter on top.
Was this my problem? I really hope so. The only thing is that in the store when I tested the cab at the store, with my bass and GB, it shook the room. Incidentally it was also sitting atop another DB112 which wasn't plugged in, so wouldn't this have the same effect? I just don't know, but would love to get to the bottom of this.
