Aguilar DB359 Cab pairing

Sign in to disble this ad
Ey I'm the proud owner of an Aguilar DB359. I've unwrapped it and tried it at low volume through a GS112 and after the holidayss I'll be pairing two GS112's to get more ooomph!

My query is From experience would the DB cabs be a better match for this head? I'm guessing Aguilar weren't actually making the DB cabs when the 359 came out. I have previously owned a DB410 but sold it for the smaller cabs. I now have a drivers license and am thinking about another 410 or some DB112's as I love the look. Although the same drivers as the GS any major tone difference ?

Thanks

The GS cabs are a little more forward in the midrange. I think this helps the stock tone of the older tube Aguilar gear as it has a lot of lows/low mids. The Sovtek tubes in the preamp stages kind of cloud and compress the midrange harmonics, so having a cab with more midrange character is a better teaming. You could also play with swapping the preamp tubes as it is cheaper than buying new cabs.

I have played through a 359 and DB 410. Excellent pairing. The GS series cabs are a bit more "open", I prefer the DBs.

Try both, see which works best for you.

Did you mean the DB cabs? Every comparison of the DB and GS series I've read says the DB cabs are more mid-forward. And based on the DB410 I owned, I would agree.

I've never tried the 359, but the DB series tends to play well with tube heads. Of course, so do the sealed Bergantino NV cabs.

I second the Goliath II. I used my DB659 going into the power section of a Super Redhead, and it was tons better than the stock scooped sound of the SWR preamp section. The redhead is essentially just a Goliath with a built-in head. And, yes, I meant the DB cabs are more mid forward than the GS cabs. Just listen to older live Gary Willis recordings. He used GS112's and the DB680/DB728 or DB750 all the time. John Pattitucci also used the DB680/DB728 and GS112. The DB359 and GS112 is pretty much like a shrunken version of that combo.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm based in the UK and will see if I can try any of those cabs. I may contact the guy who bought my old db410 and see if I can do a deal to get it back. However my first goal is to hear this DB359 GS112(x2) in full band practice and decde if the rig has the balls to keep up. I have heard that the 359 can lack volume but I believe it will be plenty for my needs. Plus the low volume noodle I had sounded wonderful. Big, pillowy and almost three dimensional!

Again thanks and seasons greetings!
