Aguilar DB750 through 2 Accugroove Tri115L's

Sign in to disble this ad
Accugroove odyssey so far:

El Whappo: TOO much volume for my gigs, way too large and
awkward to schlep around.

Whappo Jr: Again, amazing tone with a wicked lowmid kick
but STILL too much on a lot of what I do. Still
have it as a backup, but I doubt I'll use it any
time soon.

Tri112L: Awesome cabinet for small/medium size gigs. If
you've ever been at a gig that was SUPPOSED to be
low volume but ended up much louder than you
expected, then this cab would ensure that you had
a big enough sonic footprint to hang in there. Little
heavy when you consider other lightweight 112's

Tri210L: Loved the tone of this cab, although it was a little
too much at times in the low end and was generally
darker sounding then Accugroove's other cabs.

Tri112L/Tri115L: Truly a more-portable and brighter sounding
El Whappo. Also sounded great with an
AG500SC on top. Liked that if needed I
could break up the pair at a gig if I needed
to. A few times I showed up at a gig with
the Whappo Jr or El Whappo only to find
that I brought a Bradley Tank to a knife fight

Tri115L: My favorite standalone small/medium gig cab. With
the DB750 it's like having a modern variant of the
venerable Ampeg B-15. If I need a smaller footprint
I bust out the AG500SC and play with the -10db
switch engaged. This cab sounds equally as good
at a very low volume as it does when pushed to the
extreme.

TWO Tri115L's:

Just tried this out last night at an outdoor
show and both me AND my band had many moments. Flat out the BEST tone I've had live. Effortless extension on the Bstring, balanced throughout the frequency spectrum with a slight lowmid kick, and with a more extended hi-end than with the ElWhappo or Whappo Jr. Every note sounded thick and clear at the same time, and I could see where volume would NOT be an issue at just about ANY venue with this setup.

Going forward I'll have both heads and both cabs on hand and will be ready for ANY venue I come across!!!!!

great summary of the line! I agree with most everything, having owned all of them at some point.

I'm glad you found the rig that works best for you, I tried the 2xtri115 and it ended up being too much. Now I use 2xtri112 and its perfect, and still have an EW for the truly stupid loud gigs

what bass are you primarily using for this testing btw?

I was torn between ditching the Tri115 for 2 Tri112's or the other way around. I'd still love to hear what two Tri112's would sound like. I"m guessing mid-heavy but NICE!!!!

yeah, compared to the EW, I miss a little of the super deep lows with the 2xtri112 (which is like saying "compared to the bugatti veyron, the lamborghini is slow"), but the overall balance of tone with those cabs is killer. I do end up cutting some mids, as you predicted. The tpne also depends alot on the amplifier and amount of headroom available, which is why I'm going back to a high powered rack amp with a HBP1

That's what I expected, and the car analogy is apt I"m sure!!! As for the mids, there's always this maxim to keep in mind:

"You can always take something away, but you can't add what's not there in the first place"

In general, I think that Accugroove cabs benefit greatly from some tube coloration in front of them. When I had my ElWhappo it sounded KILLER with an SVT Classic and all my Accugroove cabs sound great wtih my DB750

Haven't tried the DB751, but the DB750 and the Whappo Jr were made for each other. I just like the 2 Tri115L setup THAT much better.

Over the weekend I had a common challenge: have enough punch-you-in-the-chest low end to get the dance floor moving AND balance with the loud PA blasting the sax/keys/vocals, but that did NOT have subs fit for bass. This rig met that challenge and THEN SOME. Huge 3D notes that kept a thick presence up and down the neck. VERY cool. Plus, I learned that stacking the cabs on their sides so that the midrange driver is higher up REALLY allows for me to hear more midrange/highs, and looks more compact from side-to-side. The only test left is to hear how my gut-strung EUB sounds thru this rig. CAN"T WAIT!!!!!
