Aguilar GS112: Additional bracing?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been using two Aguilar GS112s for a few years now and I'm really happy with them for the most part. I play a lot of reggae and love the deep bottom end and ease of transport. I replaced the stock speakers with Eminence Deltalite II 2512s which gave me a bit more midrange (I think). I only play fretless, so the scooped sound of these cabs left me wanting a bit more mids.

I added a second carrying handle to each cab that is identical to the stock one. I found it awkward to load the cab into my car with just one handle, but I wonder if I might have reduced the rigidity of the cabinets, thereby reducing the mids.

Do you think it may help to add some additional bracing to the cabs?

A second handle shouldn't affect anything. As for adding bracing, there is a point of diminishing returns, but without seeing the cab I can't say whether yours is there or not. I can say that the average commercial cab is under-braced.

Thanks a lot for the response. It's great to hear from such a respected expert!

When I get some extra time, I may put one brace going from side-to-side and one going front-to-back and glue them together at the intersection.

Thanks again, Bill!
