Aguilar GS112 vs. G-K Neo 112

Sign in to disble this ad
I'd like to add a 1x12 cab to my stable for small-to-medium size gigs. I was all set to get the Aguilar when I noticed it was listed at 42 lbs. vs. just 30 lbs. for the G-K (and I'm not as young as I used to be).

Will I be sacrificing tone if I get the lighter cabinet? Or if not exactly sacrificing, what difference could I expect?

Head is an original SWR SM400, btw. Thanks in advance,

CS

I have no experience with the Aggie, but I am a big fan of GK 12's. Had a Neo 412 a couple years ago, then 2-212's last year, and now 1-212. I really like the sound they produce... kinda midrangey, but can go deep or high if you EQ them right. They sound great overall, IMO.

I've liked everything I've heard from GK's Neo cabs I've played through. I don't have experience with the 1-12". But quite a few people have posted about how much they like them. Just today, Tom Bowlus commented, in another 12" cab thread, quite favorably about GK Neo 12 cabs.

With the GS112,I seem to have read quite a few people mention the smooth, possibly scooped mids causing you to get lost in the mix. I can understand how that may be the case. Mids are what it's all about, imo. The GS112 sounds nice when played on it's own. But that isn't the important test.

I should point out that the listed weight of 42 lbs on the GS112s seems a little off. I recently measured both of mine, and they clocked in at 39 lbs each.

The GS is not at all heavy and has a decent sprung handle..and not a strap.
It is very easy to carry round and feels very light.

Your back would have to be shot to complain about that..and I doubt you could play bass standing up if it was bad enough to resgister the GS as being too heavy.

The GS is indeed scooped which makes it a very nice sounding bass cab..how much mid you need and how much your amp can dial in for a band situation will be the main issue.

Yes, I do like the GK Neo112. I'll have to look up my notes from when I A/B'd the GK to some other really nice 1x12's, but I can say that is is quite articulate, pretty quick to respond, and plenty full sounding (though not as warm or round as some others). I only have one, so I am not sure how a pair sounds, but I also like the Neo212, so I'd expect good things from a pair of them.

The GS112 is a more warm, rich, lush sounding cab, and yes, I do hear it as being somewhat mid-scooped (the DB112 has more midrange presence and punch, if you are leaning towards and Aguilar cab and want more mids). I have not spent as much time with a GS112, and I don't own one, but I've heard them on multiple occasions.

That GK is really an amazing cab for its price (and weight), though.

The lack of mids in my GS112 really got to me after a while. I replaced the stock driver with a Eminence Deltalite II 2512 Neo. This helped while reducing weight.

If I had been buying new, I would have gone for the GK. As I understand it, GK makes their own speakers and is able to offer a lot bang for the buck.

Thanks for the info. :-) I'm definitely leaning toward the GK. And the fact that the price is lower doesn't hurt either. -- CS
