Aguilar Tone Hammer vs. Radial JDI?

Sign in to disble this ad
It took me long enough but I finally realized that I actually do need a DI for my mini-recording setup. Now I just need to decide which one. I'm leaning towards the JDI because all of my basses are active and I seriously doubt that I'll ever own a passive bass for any significant length of time. I shouldn't really need any more tone-shaping than my on-board preamp provides, right? I like the JDI for it's simplicity but my love of knobs and switch has me curious of other options (really, just the Tone Hammer) as well. Just looking for some opinions.

I have not great knowledge with DI but every time I went to studio the JDI was used... from that two output : one goes direct to the board and the rest through a preamp/amp/etc...

I have programmable sansamp which I use at home that does the trick for me... but somes seems to be allergic to this thing though... lol

I've always appreciated extra tone shaping. Especially when playing with effects or with heavier bands, and even in conjunction with an active preamp.

I keep the JDI in a box... with alll the DAW and VST options available most alterations should be done after recording.

I ended up with the JDI after recording fretless at a $$$$ stuidio on a Countryman85.... by mistake we plugged in the JDI...

I was forced by the producer to go back and record everything again with the JDI... all of the countryman tracks were deleted.

Oh yea... for tone shaping... seems as if the MXR M80 has been more requested than the Aguilar in my studio work....

(and yes.. you ignore the silly distortion on the MXR)

I use a JDI for live work in Church, and even for TV work.

I stick in the Pre-Amp out of my SVT, and then return the feed to the power amp.

It's a tank.

Yep..def. the JDI... Im using this at a local studio for a recording project and it blows me away everytime. Ive asked the engineer several times if my signal is purely bass->jdi-> board as it sounds so warm and tubey...im actually looking at buying one and ditching my gb shuttle...

tone hammer really disappointed me..not sure what i wanted with it but never really got me there..as others have mentioned all the tone shaping i need can be found onboard

I have and like the ToneHammer, which is a great live pre/DI, but for your application, I think I would also go with the JDI.

I went with a JDI as well. It's a great DI. Very simple, nothing to it, always sounds great. What I put into it comes out.

Now that is a brilliant idea, I'm stealing that.

For the record, I have used my JDI to record my passive Fender jazz bass direct. It works like a champ. Nice clean, fat tone. Simple.
