Alembic F1X Advice Needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok TBers, I need your collective advice. I currently play a Genz STL 900 into either an Avatar 2x10 (8ohm) or 4x10 (4ohm) Neo. Both sound great, and I'm really digging the portability of this head and 2x10 cab combo to practice or small gigs. Medium sized to large gigs I pair the STL with the 4x10. I have had great sound support from the PA crew in the past which has allowed me to really use the on stage rig as monitoring only. Unfortunately it looks like there is a chance that we may loose the sound guy and all his sweet gear, leaving me to cut through the 7-piece band. PA support may not be as good so...

I'm planning on running my Alembic F1X at larger gigs where I can use a two channel power amp (suggestions welcome), and both the 2x10 and 4x10 cabs for what would likely be a wall of sweet 70s style tube heaven. I currently have the Alembic running through a Carvin HT-750 (250 watts @ 4ohms, 175 @ 8ohms). and it's OK but I need more juice.

I've tried running a Peavy IPR 3000, but blew through 2 units (well documented in the IPR thread), so I'm a little gun shy to try Peavy again, but that's the weight to power ratio I'm looking for. Also, I'm under the impression that I can run a two channel power amp into both cabs without issue because they are separate channels and ohms loads wont matter.

Plan B would be to sell the Alembic and buy another 4x10 and 8 ohn and use the Genz with it and the 2x10.

Thoughts, suggestions?

As the 2x10 has twice the impedance of your 4x10 it will be safe to run them together for a 2.67Ω total load. The amp you use will need to be stable at 2Ω. My main rig consists of a tube pre-amp driving a Carvin DCM1000L. They work very well together.

If I run each cab on a different channel is it still 2.67ohms? I assumed the channels were sepperate and there for I would get the power at the 4 and 8 ohm respectively. Are you suggesting I run them in series?

Paul is saying you can run both cabs off one channel or a mono/single channel poweramp if it is stable at 2ohms

So the Carvin DCM 2000 + F1X isn't doing it for you?

That is plenty of power. One suggestion is to add a 15 band or 31 band eq so you can explore frequencies that will help you cut thru, but still sound good. I have found success by boost 80 and 250, but cutting 125hz.

The other thing is looking for better, more efficient cabs with better dispersement. I'd bet one fEARful 1515/66 would be all you need in terms of power handling and tone. It has excellent dispersement and is reasonably portable considering what it is.

My .02.

Yes, more speakers is the answer. A pair of 8 ohm 4x10's should do nicely.
