Sign in to disble this ad
I have each of these speakers and just picked up an old tl606.
Are either of these speakers good for the cab? I don't know how to read & understand spec sheets, that's why I'm asking for help.
Would I be better off saving money for a 3015?
I'll probably only use it with my B15S as an extension or by itself.(I've made the amp a head.)
Thanks in advance.

Offhand, I'd think the Altec would be the classic choice, but why not try 'em both, and see which you prefer? |

True, very pricey!
I guess I will have to just try. Want to avoid wrecking a speaker, though.

I've got a blown one that I was going to get reconed. Maybe I'll sell it. BTW---if you get a 421a you have to file off the ribs on the mounting side to front-mount. I've already done that on mine. |

| | | | I've got a pair of 421's in an old Peavey cabinet.
Very nice tone but they don't take loads of power.
Easiset thing would be to try each and report back since you have them; I'd be interested to know your opinion.
Also had a Sunn 2x15 with JBL's but that was too long ago to be able to compare. |

I think I'll put the Altec back in there and the CB15 in the tl 606 so I don't have to sand down the ribs on the Altec.
Also, I can use the tl606 with the CB15 with other heads as I plan to either find another or build one.

I'm sitting on an Altec, a JBL K140, and 3 EV (an M15L and 2 DL 15X) wishing I had a pair of TL606 or similar to load. Found a guy in Mich with 3 TL606 boxes for $25 each but we can't get past the shipping.

It is also a very, very good driver. My advice would be to save your sheckles until you can grab one. Use your existing Eminence in the meantime.
The 421 is too fragile - it's an awesome driver that deserves a nice sealed portaflex style box. (IMO, IMO !!)
BTW - Great Plains Audio is the place for Altec service.

Durability - that is what is to be gained when using the 3015 in there. I've actually listened to a 3015 in a TL606 and it sounds pretty darned good. Several other TB'ers have had similar experiences. Chef for instance. Not to mention that if a larger amp comes along, we won't just shred the 421 too! The 421 is just about strong enough to take that 60 watts is my take on it. In spite of the magnet size, this is not a real beefy driver. IMO those factors make the 3015 a better choice.
As far as the 421 working in a sealed box, maybe the spec doesn't read that way but they sound fantastic in the sealed portaflex enclosure.

| What portaflex cab is sealed? Other than the new PF115 and 210.
