Am I really doing this!? (Letting go of my SVT content!)

So, it's coming down to the fact that I don't see any use for my SVT-II in the near future. Heck, even the distant future. I don't plan to tour so I don't see a need for it. It's big, hard to carry, and much more powerful than my current needs warrant. I could use cash more than this amp or it's accompanying overkill of a Genz Benz 610 as the girl and I are moving in around August and I'm without work currently.

Will I miss it? Hell yes. Will I get another one if I sell it? Probably.

Talk me out of it or into it.

Haha, I expected to see a few of these responses.

If you're actually serious, shoot me a PM. I don't want to break any rules 'round here.

I downgraded to a light combo and never looked back. I had a V4BH, SVT, SVT 3-PRO, Mesa 400+, Mesa M-Pulse 600, 610 Ampeg, Mesa Powerhouse 1000 cab, Ampeg Pro 410 HLF and the list goes on and on and on.

Unless you have someone else moving it for you, go lighter. With the VT bass, Ampeg Micro VR stack, and other technology out there there is no reason not too.

I settled on an Eden Nemesis 115 320 watt combo and extension cab. Weighing about 40 lbs each and can get almost any tone I got with the other gear above. The Edge knob on the Nemesis gear is a nice addition.

If I decided to get another setup it would be the double stacked Ampeg Micro VR or a Mesa Walkabout head with an Avatar 212 at 4 ohm.

That's what I was hoping to hear. My Bag End 410 is as big as I want to get. It'll fit in my car's trunk (barely) and gets loud enough to injure small stature people. I think I'm willing to keep using heavy gear. I just can't handle the inability to transport it.

I moved my 400+ for that reason. Awesome, but I can get actually a better "Me" style tone from a lighter, easier to carry head and still plenty powerful.

I never played through a tube SVT, so I don't know what I am missing. I have a VT bass and think that the GK preamp is more to my liking, but that is probably because it's the only brand that I have consistantly owned over the past 11 years and I'm just used to how they sound. If you didn't need cash, I would probably keep it. Something drew you to it the first time, and you will probably want it again. Things change and you are still young enough to haul it around...but I'm in Columbus so you woundn't have to ship if you sold it to me
Good luck!

Well, if you ever want to try one out, let me know. I'm plenty willing to let people doodle on my gear so that they can try something new out. Send me a PM if you want to!

I know what you're going through. I recently downgraded from an 8x10 to a 6x10 for portability reasons.

I thought I was getting a 610 for portability. This thing kicks the butt off of any Ampeg cabinet I've ever played through, even my old 810. It's deeper, louder, and sounds a whole lot more clear. Argh, I'll miss it too... Then again, the Bag End is pretty close so I'll be okay.

I know the feeling. Within the last week I've gotten an SVT, and while I love the tone I absolutely hate the weight. Just moving it from one room to another is a PITA! I don't know if I'll sell it or not just yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if I go back to a Markbass head within a year.

If you don't mind carrying the SVT-II, mine sounds great with a pair of Bag End 15's.

I've been on a 4x10 and a 2x10 (not at the same time) for years now and I've never missed the weight or anything else for that matter. I've got a 1st Gen Ashdown ABM500 that isn't light but is no SVT for sure.
I've loaded into venues in one trip!

If you like the sound, make sure you get something that does a pretty close approximation.

I'm now scrambling to get a Mesa 400+ again...

If you like the GB 6x10 and want to downsize, I highly recommend trying the GB Uber 4x10 or 2x12 (my preference). Rock solid, loud, and super low end.

The new technology in bass amps and cabs has made alot of us move on from the 135lb. 810 cabs and the 50lb. plus heads. I kept my head but sold my cab, and my back thanks me at every gig.

I'm very hard headed about selling amps. "It's got a different tone!". but IF you need the money sell it. I've only heard good things about the VT bass pedal and I'm sure you can dial that tone in with a good lightweight amp.

+1

I'd wait 'til you have something you like as much or better.

See how long that takes.

If you need money... try to find more work. Selling gear to pay bills is a losing proposition, because you wind up not having gear, and still needing to find more work in two months.

And don't sell anything you plan to "just buy again" in the future. It's a PITA.
