Amp adjustment in conjunction with preamp?
I appologise in advance if the question is dumb.
I have Fender passive bass alongwith SvT preamp and Marshall amp.
My question is, when adjusting the sound, should I:
- adjust the preamp only and leave the amp neutral ?
- adjust the preamp along with amp (if so, should I do it similiar, like boost lows and highs to the same level for exmple ?) ?
I assume the common answer will probably be "it depends" or "do as you like" :) But could anyone explain me the theory about it and pros and cons ?
Thanks in advance for any reply.
What are you running?
Also, what is Your goal?
Usually when people use Marshall amps, regardless of the instrument, they do so because of the pre-amp voicing. Especially SS.
With tubes, "Marshall" OT + EL34's (or 6550's) can offer some benefits, but since the OT's today are rather similar in quality and converting most of the amps for EL34's is easy, very few bother to use 'em just as power amps.
If I wanted to use that combination, Iwould probably plug the SVP (?) into the FX return/power amp in of the Marshall.
If I was asked to use that setup on a gig, I'd probably leave the SVP out though ;).
Im running home practice rig (I'm an amateur player):
MIM Fender Jazz
Marshall MB15 combo
