I'm in the market for a new amp, but I'm gunna need one for both bass and guitar.
It's for doom/ambient/sludge/generally heavy slow music.
I've got a budget up to ~1,500.
I'd be playing it through a 2x15 and a 4x12.
Amps I've been looking at
Ampeg V4
Sunn model T
...And that's it really.
I'd love an Orange, but way too much money.
I was also looking in to getting a Peavey 5150, and a Sunn Beta Bass/some other bass amp and running them together, but I don't wanna screw up my 5150 by playing a bass through it.

I was worried about causing problems to my 5150. I've got bass cabs so I should be set if I do that. Quote:

I've never been able to actually hear a sound city in person....I'll look in to them though,

Right now I have a Sound City B150 and a Boss Power Stack pedal into either a Peavey or Marshall 412 cab. Also sounds great! |

| | | | The Orange Thunderverb 200 comes into mind here. Sounds great for both guitar and bass. If you can get a Sunn Model T though, I'd go for that, even though it has less Watts. Thunderous amp, it just oozes Doom.

Due to the weird volume/master setup, you can get some amazing overdrive out of channel 2 (the bass channel). You can also get a pretty clean bass sound on that channel, albeit with somewhat limited headroom, depending on how many speakers you're running.
Channel 1 is the guitar channel, though it has this odd cascading gain feature (for maximum overdrive, turn both volume knobs all the way up, but keep the master knob between 1 and 9). Sounds great for stoner/doom type stuff.

However they are just too expensive right now.
A Sunn model T is whats on my radar, booming, louder than all hell, and surprisingly affordable.

That 5150 might sound fantastic through bass cabinets. You never know. It's worth a try. |

| | | | My recommendation: "red-knob" Fender Dual Showman. I have one that I've used for guitar and bass, and it is great for both. It is (conservatively) 100 watts, all tube (4 x 6L6's), 2 channels, reverb on some models (SR) and made in the USA. It is easily the loudest guitar amp I've ever used, and you can usually get a good deal on them. |

Good used ones can be found in your price range. Usually later PCB amps, or earlier modded amps. Definitely player amps vs. collector pieces.
Cheers!

Volume may be a concern, but I'd say most heads through a bass cab should sound decent as long as the OD doesn't cut too much low end, I remember seeing a youtube video of a bassist who runs a Recto in combination with an SM-900. |
