Amp + cab help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TB, I need some help.
So I recently sold my SVT to go the light weight hybrid rout, but I have some questions. I've narrowed my search to either a Mesa walkabout, or an orange terror bass,,, leaning more towards the orange. And I've narrowed my cab search to either an avatar b212 or b410.
I play everything from death metal to adult contemporary indie pop. My question is of the options above, what do you think would be the most well rounded set up?
I play a 2009 am STD p bass.

Please keep in mind I'm 90% going to the orange.
Thanks,,,, I'm now at the mercy of the court

You don't need "help", just go play each one and see what you think.

410 by a slight but noticeable margin.

If you were running an SVT cab before, and you've accepted that as your baseline, the Avatar cabs are going to sound way different and may not be what you're looking for. They generally have a midrange suckout in the "no man's land" between 1800 Hz and 4000 Hz. See here, courtesy bgavinsound, and with thanks to Bill Fitzmaurice for pointing it out to me some time ago. Now... if you never generate any content in that frequency range because of your usual tone settings, then there's no concern. But if you like a "middy" or flat sound, or if you loved the sound of your SVT cab, then I'd say neither Avatar cab is for you. If you've got your sights set on Avatar, you might want to check out the new 1x15, which has a dedicated midrange driver. In theory it ought to be able to get pretty loud (long piston stroke), but in practice, in the cab it's mounted in, it's still TBD, because oftentimes you can fit an elephant in between lab tests and theory, and actual performance in the field. This is a new model and the reports from stage use have yet to come in, but I'll venture you'll need two to hold up against a single-cab SVT rig in the field. Hope this helps.

Hey Craig you may be correct. My first thought when I sold was to go with the new fender tv15, I'm just not sure it will be loud enough for some of the gigs I have. Does anyone have thoughts on the tv15? I love the sound. Also keep in mind I play everything from indie pop to death metal. I love using a vintage sound and my p bass for every gig..... Help I'm going crazy. I will also add that I ditched the 810 a long time ago, and was using the svt with a classic 15.

Sorry I didn't get back to this until now. My own view on the TV15 is that it'll be woefully inadequate for how you plan to use it. Also the thing weighs sixty pounds, which does not satisfy your "lightweight" criterion. And then consider what exactly you're getting at that price point. For lightweight, consider a lightweight head and a couple of lightweight 2x12 cabs.

Hey man thanks for the reply. I've played through the tv and I really love the sound, that's why it intrigues me so much. I will also add that I didn't find it cumbersome or all that heavy. Honestly I'm considering getting 2 of them and and running them together for some of my gigs, also keeping one at each rehearsal space. Have I completely lost my mind? I feel with 2 the load would still be easy, it would fit in my car, and I could move ridiculous air. I also hear the xlr is really great on them.

My main gig is a softer indie pop band, we do however play big rooms with big crowds. One tv should handle it tho, and if not I would have 2. Please give me your thoughts.
Thanks
I wanted to add that I tried markbass stuff and I hated it. I also played a walkabout and liked it,,, but didn't love it. The tv is the only thing I loved.
Help

Nope, that option makes a lot of sense.
